Okay, so I have a shit time coming up with titles that just hit the spot. When I do, it's like this big THING for me, because I struggle with it.

For those of you who just read "Convergence," you need to understand that the title never quite did it for me. It was what I could come up with on the spur of the moment.

As I was chatting with one of my friends here at work, we were talking fic, and somehow, it just struck me.
The title should have been: "A Tide in the Affairs of Men."
That's it. It says it all. And now I'm kicking myself that I didn't come up with it on time to post.

So what do I do? Change the title?

We're barely 24 hours out from the first large-scale meetup for the Kansas City Star Trek group. To make sure everyone is on the same page, here's our last-minute summary and planning post.

THE PLAN:
At 2:00 PM, we meet at McCoy's in Westport. This is a brewery/restaurant. The website for the place is HERE if you want to scope it out first. The address is:
4057 Pennsylvania Ave., Kansas City, MO 64111

After we eat, drink, and be merry, we'll proceed to my house which is about 1.5 miles away. At my place, the fun continues with a screening of the new DVD and special features, and then some old-school TOS or one of the older movies. (Does anyone have a blu-ray player?)

The party ends when we collapse from the sheer exhaustion of squeeing all night.

For more information, GO HERE. (Also, while you're there, join the group!)

As many of you remember from last week, I took up a collection for my friend, Paul Burns. He was involved in an incident that he didn't instigate, and was injured when someone punched him in the face with a razor blade. He needed 150 stitches. He's the least confrontational guy you'd ever meet, so he's the last person you'd expect something like this to happen to. He's also one of us - a fellow fandom geek.

And despite working full time, he has no health insurance.

So last week, I asked for donations... and fandom, you came through. Brilliantly. The grand total from online donations:

$324.05!

I also asked for donations at my church - a geeky gaggle of Unitarian Universalists, some of whom know Paul. We collected another $112.

I tallied the funds together, deposited it, rounded it up, and last night, I was able to give Paul a check for $500.00.
I've always said that fandom folks are the best people in the world. Thank you for proving me right. You guys are all amazing.

Here's the idea:  I'd like to have at least one meetup before Thanksgiving.  I want it to be relaxed, low-key, simple, and fun.  I want to make sure that as many people as possible can attend, and that the venue will be conducive to everyone.  We've got folks in Lawrence, folks in Kansas City, and even someone out in Topeka.  I think I'd like to do this meetup in Kansas City, and the next one in Lawrence.

Here's the plan:  Either this Saturday (the 14th) OR next Saturday (the 21st), we'll get together for food, drinks, movie/episode watching, and general geekery.

We'd start at McCoy's in Westport around 2:00 PM.  Food, drinks, breaking the ice, general silliness.  For anyone who hasn't been there, McCoy's is a restaurant and brewery.  They have a fantastic selection of their own beers, and their food is just damned good.  You DO NOT have to be 21+ to go in - it's a restaurant, not a bar.  Even though it's a Saturday, 2:00 PM shouldn't be too crowded, and we'll probably be able to geek out to our hearts' content without distracting the mundane folks.

After food and beer and socializing, I personally invite everyone to join me at my house, which is less than two miles from McCoy's, and within very easy access of I-35 and other major roads.  (I'm near KU Med.)  The party continues until folks get tired and need to leave.

More details HERE.

As many of you have noticed, a lot of us that came in under the same fandoms have drifted over time. That's normal, especially as fandoms shift, canons close, and people move on. I'm just curious though - what fandoms do you now claim as home? I'm kinda curious to see where my friends have found themselves in their fandom lives. So... a poll![Poll #1471249][Poll #1471249]
mijan: (Fandom - Come for the PORN)
Our slashy, geeky fandom reunion event (lovingly known as the Non-Con) has hit a bit of a snag.  Due to unforseen circumstances, some people had to drop out.  We're unable to make the minimum number of room reservations required by our contract with the hotel.

HOWEVER...

One thing I've been noticing is how many cross-fandom friends I have.  I don't want to restrict this event to Harry Potter fandom.  A LOT of Potter fandomers are also fans of Star Trek, Doctor Who, Merlin, Torchwood, Supernatural, and much MUCH MORE.  So... can we put out a call to SLASHERS?  Other geeks who hold similar interests?

Who would be interested in coming to Kansas City on the weekend of October 9th - 11th to hang out with a bunch of friendly, slashy, pervy geeks?

See the [livejournal.com profile] slasher_familycommunity for more details.  If you're interested, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE contact me or [profile] fiona_fawkesASAP to iron out details about room reservations and so on.

And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - CROSS POST THIS.  Tell other people about it.  Spread the word.  If you know anyone who might be interested, or a community where other people might be interested, please pass it on.

Thanks!

mijan: (Fandom - Come for the PORN)
Okay ladies and gentlegeeks, time is getting short for the upcoming Slasher Fandom Reunion here in Kansas City.

For those of you who haven't been paying attention, let me tell you a little bit about it. This is a convention without the convention. All the stuff you love about convention without the formal programming to get in the way.  That basically gives us more time to do the naughty stuff we actually came to do anyway.

WHEN:  Friday October 9th to Monday October 12th, 2009 - the weekend of Columbus Day/Canadian Thanksgiving.
WHERE:  Kansas City, MO, in the Westport/Plaza district, Embassy Suites.
WHO:  Slash-friendly fandom folks ages 18+.

The Non-Con has:
- NO REGISTRATION FEE.
- Suite rooms for $129 per night for up to four people.  (You should see these suites, guys - they're awesome.  Wet bar/kitchenette and all.)
- Free, hot, cooked-to-order breakfasts.
- Free cocktail reception each night we're there (yes, that means booze included for two hours each evening).
- A swanky swimming pool and hot tub.  HOT TUB.  Come on guys!  HOT TUB.
- A large gaggle of pervy slashy fandom friends.
- Drabble and Drawble sessions.
- Impromptu round-table discussions.
- An outing to a local drag show.
- Sightseeing and silliness in the best part of Kansas City.
- Reduced internet rate for our group.

So, what are you waiting for?  Go to THIS POST for registration information.  You need to register by this Friday.  Be sure to use the group code "HPF" to get our discount when registering, and for your room reservation to count towards the number of rooms we've agreed to book.

Then, please join the [livejournal.com profile] slasher_family community for more information, to find roommates, and PLEASE PLEASE let [profile] fiona_fawkes know that you've reserved a room.  We need to keep track of how many rooms our group has booked.  Visit THIS POST for the most recent information.

And then... PIMP THIS LIKE CRAZY.

See you in October!

This will have to be quick.  I'm at my mother's house, and our wireless internet isn't working well, so I'm using my mother's computer quickly to update.  Then I'll really need to head back out to the living room and be sociable.

So anyway, this week has been fucking AWESOME.  I can't put into words how much I miss my old city. Oh-oh, Boston, you're my home!  I arrived in town last Saturday, and immediately met up with a whole gaggle of fandom friends for Vietnamese food (*NOM!*) in Chinatown.  From there, it was a private evening of BDSM at the Sheraton hotel in downtown Boston.

Sunday was peace and relative quiet, but I did meet up with [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots , [livejournal.com profile] nqdonne , [livejournal.com profile] kriken , Kriken's boyfriend, and... (goddammit, I'm having a mental block on the other person's screen name - HALP!) for munchies at the Uno's restaurant in Times Square.  Stayed at [livejournal.com profile] tsuj 's house in Brookline, which became my home base for the week.

Monday, I hit the city with [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots and [livejournal.com profile] andreanna , and also met up with [livejournal.com profile] hitlikehammers in Harvard Square, because she just HAPPENED to be in town for the week (to my amazement, we connected recently over the Star Trek fandom, despite having been acquainted in the Potter fandom back on FictionAlley as long ago as 2003).  Best memory from that day - climbing trees on the Esplanade with [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots  and [livejournal.com profile] andreanna . Lizard, m'dear, please send me the pictures when you get home!

Tuesday started in Salem, MA with lizardspots and tsuj.  We met up with my mother.  [livejournal.com profile] tsuj went back to Boston, and [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots and my mother and I went up into Gorham, NH (very close to Mount Washington) and stayed at this GORGEOUS bed and breakfast.  We watched the meteor shower that night, as much as possible.  Lizard saw her first shooting star, which I think is something essential that all human beings must do.  We run in my birthday at midnight, and Lizard and I "celebrated" by reading a Trek fic.  Go figure, right?  :p

Wednesday was our day in the mountains.  We tried to go hiking, but got SO swarmed by mosquitoes that we had to quit.  Really, it was THAT BAD.  But instead, we took the car up Mount Washington, and the clouds broke long enough for us to see the valley from several different angles.  T'was great.  Finished the day at my mother's house with homemade Nova Scotia style fish chowder (includes scallops and lobster, traditional style).  Lizard and I attempted to watch the whole Star Trek movie on my laptop, but finally got too damn sleepy and gave up.  Slept like a fucking LOG.

Thursday was the Freedom Trail in Boston with my mother acting as historical tour guide (she's a historian) for Lizard and me.  Favourite memories: the random guy on the cell phone outside the Bell in Hand tavern (oldest tavern in America), and getting randomly pulled into the Fisherman's Festival parade in the North End.  I LOVE randomly stumbling into festivals in the North End.  Music and dancing and food and just good people having a good time.  So many details to tell from that evening!  So much fun!

Friday, Lizard and I went to the Museum of Science.  I seldom have people who geek out as much as I do about SCIENCE (yes, I'm a science geek, too, not just a fandom/sci-fi/fantasy geek), and that was just awesome.  I wish we'd had more time.  Alas, we didn't, and had to leave when we still had stuff we wanted to do.  We hurried to Harvard Square to meet up with another gaggle of fandomers (including [livejournal.com profile] nuclearpolymer and [livejournal.com profile] venusloon , who I'd never met before, and were both awesome).  Several of us then progressed to [personal profile] ravenna_c_tan 's house for snacks and geeking out, to include me, [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots , [livejournal.com profile] supes_ , [livejournal.com profile] tsuj , [livejournal.com profile] kriken , [livejournal.com profile] stormsdotter , and of course, [personal profile] ravenna_c_tan.

This morning, I had to pack up my stuff from [livejournal.com profile] tsuj 's house, but also because [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots ' flight only left at 6:30 PM, we had time for a last get-together and lunch.  Sadly, [livejournal.com profile] nqdonne 's job (which is evil incarnate) prevented her from joining us and seeing Lizard off, but we managed to get [livejournal.com profile] tsuj and [livejournal.com profile] andreanna along for the ride, plus [livejournal.com profile] andreanna 's boyfriend (who is another cool geek person).  We did sushi.  Halfway through the meal, my mom and sister got into town, and joined us for sushi and then for ice cream.  My mother and I drove [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots to the airport (*CRY*), and then went back to [livejournal.com profile] tsuj 's house to collect my bags.  We stopped by [livejournal.com profile] stormsdotter 's place to say hi and to pick up a costume item, and then it was up to New Hampshire for quiet time.  I cooked dinner - made a cream sauce with some wild mushrooms I foraged up in the mountains of New Hampshire (and yes, they are perfectly safe - I know my mushrooms).  VERY tasty over fresh pasta.  Amateur mycologist and gourmet cook in action!  :D

And now, I'm updating my livejournal, feeling nostalgic, and missing [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots liek whoa.

I love all you guys.  Just want you to know that.

♥

HELLO BOSTON!!!

Okay everyone, with the feedback I've gotten, here are the plans for tomorrow, Saturday, August 8th.  If you can make it, great.  If not, there will be some sort of get-together on Friday the 14th, too.

Tomorrow, we will be gathering at the Park Street stop on the Red Line at NOON.  Once our group has found everyone, we'll head over to Chinatown (a block and a half walk - very close) for lunch.  I'm really set on Vietnamese food at my favorite restaurant in the district.

About the restaurant:  It's inexpensive, but not dollar-menu cheap either.  Most meals will cost around $7 or so, but you can find fancier stuff, too, as well as less expensive items.  There are vegetarian and vegan dishes, as well as seafood.  If you like Asian-style foods at all, you're sure to find something good there.  I'm very familiar with the menu, and can help you pick out something if you're unfamiliar with Vietnamese cuisine.

If there are any strong objections to Vietnamese food, or other suggestions, speak up!

After lunch, there have been suggestions about going to a coffee house, hanging out, and talking fandom stuff (geek-out session).  Someone has also suggested catching a matinee of Half-Blood Prince.  If there are other suggestions, I'm open to that, too.  We can also decide once we're there, and we can talk over the options.

Please REPLY to this post to let us know you're coming so we can know to look for you.  I don't want to leave anyone behind.  If you want to include a description of yourself, that could help.  (I am 5'1", have short dark hair, and will probably be wearing jeans and a red t-shirt from the Sectus convention.)

PLEASE - if you want my phone number, e-mail me at faisons@gmail.com.  That way, you can call if you're running late, or if you get lost.

I'm coming home!

At least, I'm coming back to Boston! For a week. I know, it's not much, but... OH MY CITY!!! *bounces gleefully*

I shall be arriving in Boston on the morning of the 8th of August (Saturday, for those of you without calendars within easy reach). That afternoon, I shall be hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] kriken and her boyfriend, as well as [livejournal.com profile] tsuj , maybe [livejournal.com profile] 43duckies if I can reach her, and possibly [livejournal.com profile] jelliclekat and a friend of hers. I know [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots will be in town already, but will probably be hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] nqdonne that day, unless you two want to join us for lunch in Chinatown before going off to do your own thing.

[livejournal.com profile] kriken has offered to pick me up from the airport (OMG THANK YOU), but my idea is that a bunch of us could get together for lunch in Chinatown that afternoon. Of those people within striking distance of Boston, who would be interested in a fandomish lunch?

Also, the following Friday (the 14th), I'd like to organize a proper fandom get-together for [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots before she returns to England. Does anyone have any thoughts, preferences, suggestions, ideas, or input for such a get-together? Would we all like to see the HBP movie together? What do you think?

While I'm in the city, I'll be staying in Brookline, but I'll be hopping from Boston to New Hampshire a couple of times during that week.

So, who would like to meet up on Saturday, the 8th?   What about Friday the 14th?  What would you like to do?

So, with Azkatraz over, and con-drop threatening to consume our brains with angsty moping, allow me to remind you of the best cure for con-drop.  ANOTHER CON!

Only this is NOT a con.  In fact, as we've recently renamed it due to popular demand, it's the NON-CON.  Originally known as the Slasher Family/Fandom Reunion, this is a big gathering that will take place on Columbus Day Weekend in October at the Embassy Suites in Kansas City.  This is a convention without the annoyance of the actual convention.  Informal "programming" will include drabbling, drawbling, round-table type discussions (we're open for anyone to host one!), attending a drag show, sitting in the hot tub, and socializing.

There is NO registration fee!  The hotel rooms are $129/night and come with free hot breakfast for up to four people, free manager's cocktail reception each night (read: free booze for two hours every day), and EVERY room is a suite.

Interested?  Does this sound like your sort of thing?  Need roommates to make this work?

CLICK THIS LINK.

[profile] fiona_fawkes  has just posted a roommate-finding post.  Find other people who want to go!  Find roommates!  Reserve a room!

And please, pimp this on your own LJ!

Okay, so for the past two Memorial Day weekends, Fi and I have gone to Heartland Pagan Fest.  This year, however, the prices are insanely high (almost $200 for the weekend), and we've been distracted by the far-less-expensive alternative:  ConQuest, the local Sci-fi/fantasy/geekery convention.

So, this year, there shall be no naked dancing around enormous bonfires while we drum and celebrate deep into the night.  However, there shall be Hobbits and Jedi and Trekkies - OH MY!

The only question is... do any local or regional geeks want to join us?  You can still register for ConQuest at the door, and at $55 for the weekend, it's a fraction of the cost of Harry Potter conventions.  For those who can't afford the hotel, we have enough room for SOME people to stay at our house (at the discretion of [profile] fiona_fawkes  and me - NOT an open invite for the whole world, sorry).  Our house is just a couple of miles from the convention center.  There will be geekery and room parties and costumes and panels and more geekery.

Anyone interested?  I heard a rumor that at least ONE person (*pokes [livejournal.com profile] dramedy *) was interested, if she could find people to drive down with her from a nearby state.  Come on, people!  Who's feeling spontaneous and geeky?

mijan: (Fandom - Come for the PORN)
The contract is signed, the details are finalized, and the rooms at the hotel are now available at the discount rate!

Remember, we're getting a pretty sweet deal here.  We can have up to four people per suite (every room is a suite) for $129.  This INCLUDES free hot breakfast, AND free happy hour drinks and snacks.  Also, I've seen the pool and hot tub... it's fucking gorgeous.  Pool party anyone?  Hot tub?

Go HERE for more information.

And if you don't know what I'm talking about, go HERE!

Seriously, this is possibly the best mathematical model EVAR.  Some geek made an actual mathematical model of the ecology of vampires and humans.  Someone had said that if vampires live forever, they would eventually populate the planet out of control and exhaust their food source (humans).  Of course, that then led to the fact that because we are not overrun with vampires, there MUST be a Slayer.

Here's the math:

Basically, it all calculates out to show an equilibrium population of 36,346 humans and 18 vampires as long as a person slays the extra vampires.  Interestingly enough, the established population of Sunnydale on the show is 38,500 humans, pretty damn close to the equation result.   So, because we are not neck-deep in starving vampires, clearly we are living in the Buffyverse.  Proof again that Joss Whedon is a GOD, and that Stephenie Meyer is an idiot.

A couple of months ago, Fi posted a poll, asking how many people would be interested in a Slashy Fandom Reunion on Columbus Day Weekend in October, here in Kansas City.  The results of the poll were promising, and I went forward with drawing up a preliminary contract with Embassy Suites in Kansas City.  If we can't fill at least 10 rooms, we won't be able to get a contracted discount.

Before I dare to sign the contract, I need to be sure that people are REALLY COMING.  This isn't to ask IF you're interested.  This is to ask ARE YOU COMING?  We need solid answers, because once I sign that contract, I'm liable to pay a minimum of 10% of the total value of the contract, and up to 80% of the value of the contract if we cancel late.  That's a lot of money, and really, I can't afford that.  I need to be sure that people are coming.

The event starts on Friday evening, October 9th, and ends on Monday, October 12th (Columbus Day).  If you can't make it on Friday or stay through Monday, don't worry; our contract only obligates us for Saturday night, but you can get the group discount rate starting Thursday night and ending Monday night (two days before and after).

I'm coming to Boston!  Ah, my city.  How I miss it.  Alas, I'll need a place to stay while I am there.  Can you help me?

Here are the details:

When: August 9th to August 14th, minus one or two overnights mid-week.
What I need:  A couch, an air mattress, a piece of floor, some blankets and a pillow... whatever you're willing to lend where I might fall asleep.  Plus daily access to a shower.
What I'll be doing:  Running around the city with [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots , and taking an overnight in NH to visit my mom and see the mountains.  I'll leave in the morning and come back at night, and will be absolutely considerate of your sleep and work schedule.  If you want, maybe you can join us for some fun around the city, too!
I don't: Smoke, shed, or leave the toilet seat up.
I won't: Eat your food, drink your beer, or ask to watch your TV... unless you decide to offer... which is always lovely.  :)
What you'll get out of this: My eternal gratitude, the pleasure of my company, and whatever else we might negotiate.

So... can you help me?  Boston peeps... are you there?

mijan: (Fandom - Come for the PORN)
So, [livejournal.com profile] fiona_fawkes  and I are a little bit crazy, but you knew that.  We're in the process of planning a Harry Potter Fandom meetup/gathering/reunion for this October.  Imagine this if you will:

A mini-convention without all the bullshit.  A slightly more mature crowd.  No ridiculous "welcoming feast" with lousy food that makes you wish you'd just gone to the local sushi place instead.  No programming that forces you to get out of bed before noon if you don't want to.  Free hot cooked-to-order breakfasts.  A FREE cocktail hour (actually, it' two hours) each evening.  Every room is a suite, perfect for drabble groups.  A true ROOM BLOCK to ourselves.  NO REGISTRATION FEES.  Just a weekend of food, friends, fandom, and porn.

Sound too good to be true?  Welcome to the Harry Potter Fandom Reunion Relaxacon!  (*Not the actual name of the event.  Feel free to suggest one, if you wish.  A title created while drunk might be best.)

Fiona will be handling the online polling, organizing, and information-gathering.  This includes getting a list of pending attendees (so that we can reserve a room block), helping to organize rideshare groups or transportation from the airport, and taking suggestions for group activities.  A trip to see the HP movie together?  A night of themed room parties?  A pub night?  A trip to the local drag show at our favorite gay bar?  An evening of informal "formal" programming where people do mini round-table presentations in rooms?  What do you want?  Let Fi know!

I'll be handling negotiations with the hotel.  I'm trying to get the following:
- 20% to 30% discount on rooms, maybe more.  I'm going to try for 35%.  Hey, it's my Jewy goodness!
- Free Wi-Fi
- Access to the breakfast area at night to use the tables for larger writing/discussion sessions.
- What else do you want?

I'm going to work to make this as inexpensive for all of us as possible.  The standard price for the rooms is approximately $160.  All of the rooms are suites.  The standard occupancy for each room is 2 people (additional folks are $10 more each, which I'll try to negotiate down), but a double room has two double beds PLUS a pull-out sofa-bed.  All suites come with a microwave and fridge, two flat-screen TV's, a wet bar, and a balcony.

So, without further ado, go to Fiona's post and RSVP!!!
http://fiona-fawkes.livejournal.com/256199.html

We're aiming for Colombus Day weekend, but we're open to suggestions.

Who's coming?  :D
