CONVENTION!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
May. 20th, 2009 11:15 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Okay, so for the past two Memorial Day weekends, Fi and I have gone to Heartland Pagan Fest. This year, however, the prices are insanely high (almost $200 for the weekend), and we've been distracted by the far-less-expensive alternative: ConQuest, the local Sci-fi/fantasy/geekery convention.
So, this year, there shall be no naked dancing around enormous bonfires while we drum and celebrate deep into the night. However, there shall be Hobbits and Jedi and Trekkies - OH MY!
The only question is... do any local or regional geeks want to join us? You can still register for ConQuest at the door, and at $55 for the weekend, it's a fraction of the cost of Harry Potter conventions. For those who can't afford the hotel, we have enough room for SOME people to stay at our house (at the discretion of
fiona_fawkes and me - NOT an open invite for the whole world, sorry). Our house is just a couple of miles from the convention center. There will be geekery and room parties and costumes and panels and more geekery.
Anyone interested? I heard a rumor that at least ONE person (*pokes
dramedy *) was interested, if she could find people to drive down with her from a nearby state. Come on, people! Who's feeling spontaneous and geeky?

Date: 2009-05-20 04:31 pm (UTC)My dad is just freaked out about it, which I just don't understand. He told me he was afraid that I'd get pulled over and raped by klansmen. Seriously. XD Apparently because MO goes Republican so often, lololol.
I'm going to try and work my mom into letting/persuading my dad to let me go. Even if I have to drive 7 hours by myself!!!!!!!!!11!!

Date: 2009-05-20 04:35 pm (UTC)Tell your dad that when I was in my early 20's, I was on assignment at Fort Leonard Wood, and I'd drive to Springfield, MO and Kansas City via the BACK ROADS all the time, and NEVER had a problem. And I even had liberal bumper stickers. Plus, you'll be traveling on the HIGHWAYS. You'd be fine.
And actually, Missouri went to Obama in the presidential election.

Date: 2009-05-20 04:44 pm (UTC)Tell him that if you get to go, you won't upset his parents by talking nonstop about how wonderful it is that another state might allow gay marriage soon. :D

Date: 2009-05-20 04:47 pm (UTC)I should just tell him that if I get to go I won't whip out my Prop 8 Protest sign or my Bettie Page posters out of my closet, and I won't leave my pin-up books lying on my bed, lol.

Date: 2009-05-20 06:04 pm (UTC)I'm trying to get a hold of my friend who *likes* to drive and see if she'll go with me but I don't think that they have Mon. off at her school. :/ and Mom said she'd feel better if I could just get someone to go PART of the way even. So I have a friend going to STL, and I am going to try and get him to join in. :D

Date: 2009-05-20 07:12 pm (UTC)My friend who doesn't mind driving is *considering* going. The problem? She doesn't really want to go to the convention. She doesn't *read* sci-fi, and she's never watched anime. She likes Star Trek, Stargate SG-1, and other sci-fi *shows* but she's not really into the whole *convention* idea. I can probably sell her on one afternoon, but not the whole weekend? So I'm trying to figure out stuff to do outside the convention in KC and I'm drawing a blank. I was thinking the zoo? but that'll be ~*SUPER*~ busy on the weekend, esp. Memorial Day. and the Royals are in STL that weekend D: D: Any suggestions to lure her down there??

Date: 2009-05-20 07:16 pm (UTC)There's World of Fun amusement park. There's the Plaza, which has lovely shopping. There are parks for hiking and swimming. There's the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the Jazz Museum (both are awesome). There's some of the best barbecue you've ever eaten.
What does she like? I guarantee I can find something.
And tell her that there will be plenty of stuff at the convention itself for people who simply like a few geeky sci-fi shows. And tell her that the best part is the ROOM PARTIES. She doesn't even need to register for that part!

Date: 2009-05-20 07:35 pm (UTC)or maybe she'd like the Jazz Museum?
OH I hope she wants to go! :D

Date: 2009-05-20 07:38 pm (UTC)Worlds of Fun is adjacent to Oceans of Fun, which is a water amusement park. It might be warm enough for you to go to the water park. It's going to be sunny with highs of 80 degrees or higher. That's a bit outside of the city, and further away from the convention.
Either way, trust me, there's stuff to do. :D
