Title: "Redshirt"
Author: [livejournal.com profile] mijan
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Kirk, McCoy
Summary: The burden of a leader isn't the strain of heroics or the power of command. It's the constant knowledge that the lives of your people are in your hands, and the weight of guilt and loss when those lives slip through your fingers. Jim Kirk understands this now.
Warnings: Non-primary character death.

"REDSHIRT"

James T. Kirk was the finest example of a Starfleet officer, except when he wasn't, but in those cases, he usually made up for it somehow. )

Fic is currently at 54,000 words, 119 pages.  I expect another 2K to round off the rough draft.  It's been partially beta'd, and it's been test-read by a couple of people.  I still have to finish writing the wind-up scene, but I can do that.  It will be ready in time to submit to the Big Bang folks tonight.

I have to admit, I'm nervous as hell.  I've invested a lot of personal and emotional energy into this fic.  It's gotten into my head, hit on some very personal issues I have, and taken over my thought process.  I've dug into some pretty deep issues in this fic.  I got the plot bunny for it over three months ago, but I only began actively writing it after I got back from San Francisco.

I guess I'm worried that the fic won't be well-received, or that it will fade into the mess of other Big Bang fics that will be posted and won't be noticed.  Normally, while I want my fics to do well, it's not something that gets me horribly keyed up.  This time, I'm actively nervous, and I really want this fic to be spectacular.  Need this fic to be spectacular.  Not sure why.  I just do.

The wait between now and when it gets posted, however, is what's going to kill me.  All that time, not knowing how it'll be received.  *sigh*

When I finish this tonight and send it off, I'm gonna need a drink.

Title: "If You're Going to San Francisco..."
Author: [livejournal.com profile] mijan
Rating: PG
Summary: An outtake scene from the shuttlecraft trip. What happened after the scene cut away? Here are my thoughts on that.
Canon: Based in the ST:XI universe, but strongly influenced by TOS.
Total Length: 2,167 words
Characters: McCoy, Kirk
Disclaimer: Gene Roddenberry and Paramount Pictures own these pretty boys. I just play them like puppets in my cardboard box theatre.

Notes
: I started writing this about ten days ago while on an airplane, flying from Kansas to San Francisco. Looking down at the plains and the mountains, anticipating seeing San Francisco for the first time, this was just begging to be written. I finished it while overlooking the city from my room at the inn. I haven't had a chance to post it until now, so... here it is!

So why are you on this flying tin can, kid? )

Title: "Perspectives" (5/6)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] mijan
Rating: PG-13
Summary:"I can't fix it next time, Jim. I almost couldn't fix it the first time." McCoy reached up and touched Kirk's cheek. "It'll be okay."  A Starfleet Captain faces danger and death every day, but looking his own mortality in the face had been more than Kirk had been able to handle.  Even more, he couldn't accept that his best friend hadn't been able to face it either.  Now, it was time to face both.
Canon: Based in the ST:XI universe, but strongly influenced by TOS.
Characters: McCoy, Kirk, Spock, with ensemble appearances by Sulu, Uhura, a couple of random Ensigns, and most of the medical staff.
Notes: My immense thanks to my beta reader, [personal profile] classics_geek , and my test-reader, [personal profile] red_rahl . You guys are awesome!

From the previous installment:

Jim heard his own voice join the cacophony clashing above him. At least he thought it was his own voice. He didn't know anymore. "I didn't mean to… I had to be… on the bridge. I'm sorry. Sorry. My fault. Wanted to see my crew. My ship. Couldn't stay there. I'm sorry, Bones. Bones…"
And Bones was saying, "It's alright, Jim. I've got you."
"I know you do, Bones. I know…"
There were strong arms lifting him, and another hand gripping his tightly – the voices were further away now – then the whoosh of turbolift doors, and the muffled thud of feet running down the hall…

And now, the continuation...

Author: [livejournal.com profile] mijan
Rating: PG-13
Summary: He'd asked Bones if it would be okay… and now Kirk remembered… for the first time, there hadn't been a ready answer.  Grateful to be alive but distressed by his own bad decisions, Kirk slowly realizes that some things are missing from the story he's been given.  Not one to wait for answers, or for anything, Kirk takes matters into his own hands.
Canon: Based in the ST:XI universe, but strongly influenced by TOS.
Characters: McCoy, Kirk, Spock, with ensemble appearances by Sulu, Uhura, a couple of random Ensigns, and most of the medical staff.

Summary: "I'm telling you, Jim, this lovely paradise of yours is a death trap waiting to happen." Doctor Leonard McCoy usually loves to be right. This time, he wasn't prepared when he was.  Perspective is everything, and it usually changes when you're not ready for it, but you need it most.
Canon: ST:XI, strongly influenced by TOS.

This was inspired by a drabble challenge last night. True to form, I turned a drabble into a ficlet, and highly appropriate for the season. It seemed worthy of being shared, so I'm sharing it in its own post.

The challenge was from seneska_bicku, and she wanted me to write a fic in which Snape gets into a confrontation with Santa Claus. I set it for the Christmas of Harry's 6th year. Here's the result:

T'was the night before Christmas, and all through Snape's house, not a Kreacher was stirring, not even a –  )

After Sectus, a bunch of us got together and spent a few days running around London.  One afternoon, we crashed back at calyxess's hostel room, and I asked for a drabble prompt.  The prompt I received was "Luna and tears".  So, I started writing.  And as some of you know, I am INCAPABLE of drabbling.  Plots always seem to emerge.  One-hundred words?  Not going to happen.  This is what I got.

Characters: Colin Creevey, Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom
