The Paul Fund - Donation Tally

As many of you remember from last week, I took up a collection for my friend, Paul Burns. He was involved in an incident that he didn't instigate, and was injured when someone punched him in the face with a razor blade. He needed 150 stitches. He's the least confrontational guy you'd ever meet, so he's the last person you'd expect something like this to happen to. He's also one of us - a fellow fandom geek.
And despite working full time, he has no health insurance.
So last week, I asked for donations... and fandom, you came through. Brilliantly. The grand total from online donations:
$324.05!
I also asked for donations at my church - a geeky gaggle of Unitarian Universalists, some of whom know Paul. We collected another $112.
I tallied the funds together, deposited it, rounded it up, and last night, I was able to give Paul a check for $500.00.
I've always said that fandom folks are the best people in the world. Thank you for proving me right. You guys are all amazing.

Date: 2009-11-21 03:01 am (UTC)I just can't understand a system where a guy can get attacked and injured through no fault of his own, go through a horrifyingly painful ordeal, come out with a permanent scar, and THEN OWE MONEY FOR IT. It makes no sense to me. I'm glad folks have been able to help him out.
