I should start at the beginning.

I finally found a LARGE Asian foods market in the convenient Kansas City area.  I bought all sorts of stuff.  I even found a mochi rice cake.  Nom nom!  And then... what do I spy?  Tapioca pearls!  I can has BUBBLE TEA!  Squee!

I bring home the tapioca pearls.  I follow the directions for cooking them while I brew a strong cup of tea so that I can cool it and then add milk and honey and ice.  Everything is going so perfectly.

Like an alchemist on the verge of a golden creation, I put my milk and tea mixture into a pre-chilled glass, add the tapioca pearls...

And realize that I have no straws that are big enough to suck up the bubbles.

MADE. OF. FAIL.

I'm going to go drink my tea and eat the bubbles with a spoon... but it's just not the same.

*sigh*

Yeah, because that odd, choking sensation is what really makes bubble tea worth it.

And ps, the cookies need to come out of the oven now.

Yes, but if I order them, will they get here before I get to the bottom of my mug of tea?

*pouts, because I can*

OMG I love bubble tea. I didn't know you could make it at home!! My roomie works at a bubble tea shop and it's made of so much win.

Now I'm going to have to go on a bubble tea supply hunt...

It's simple. You make whatever flavor of tea you like. You can add fruit juice to it. You can get powdered mixes. You can get beverage concentrates. I prefer real tea leaves.

Brew the tea strong. About twice as strong as normal. Add honey or sugar at this point, because it dissolves more easily in hot liquid. Let it cool. Chill it in the fridge.

Take the tapioca pearls and cook them according to the directions on the package. A little longer if you like them squishier, a bit less long if you like them more firm. Drain them, rinse them in cold water, drain again.

Mix your cold tea with cold milk or cream, whichever you like. Add tapioca pearls.

USE A BIG STRAW.

Enjoy.
:D

Yes! Bubble tea! It's a sweet tea beverage with big pearls of tapioca, which are the bubbles. Is yummy.

Heh yes, I saw the entry in wikipedia. But what are the bubbles doing in it? Is it for making it taste carbonated?

Nope; not carbonated. The bubbles are chewy.

I miss Appleseed over at the Burlington Mall. They make the best stuffed crepes and bubble tea. When I lived near Waltham, we'd go once a week. The Korean couple who run it would use us to taste test their international-themed creations, once they discovered that we love world cuisine. I miss their Tokyo dessert crepe: sweet bean, honey, mascarpone cheese, and whipped creme.
Thankfully, we were able to pay them a visit back in July, and I was happy to see that they had moved from a kiosk to a counter service location.

The closest thing that I've had to bubble tea lately was the IHOP Beezlenut Splash: Sprite with cherry and blue raspberry Jello.

Hehe... I remember Appleseed. Yummy!

You can find good bubble tea in quite a few places in Chinatown. A lot of the bakeries have it.

Waaaah, I miss Boston!

Hmmm... Location - 4414 State Line, KCK, 66103.

Date... let me ask Fi. I don't think we're busy tonight. You have my phone number, right?

And Asian food market... 103rd and Metcalf. It's not HUGE like the ones in Boston, but it has enough to make me satisfied. It's on the south-western corner of the intersection, back behind the building that you can see from the road. Not obvious unless you know where to look. :D

I shall have to check it out. :DDD *excited now*

We're going to be gone all weekend, leaving tomorrow afternoon immediately after Fi gets out of work. We're heading down to a small town near Emporia to visit Fi's parents for the weekend. We'll be back on Sunday afternoon/evening.

I hope to have time some evening this upcoming week. The weekend after this, we're going to be at Camp Gaea for Earth Day.
