Start spreadin' the news, I'm leaving today...

So, I'm going to be going down to New York City and northern New Jersey this weekend. My sister, who performs in musicals, is entering a competition based on the Broadway musical "Wicked". It's a singing competition for people aged 24 and under (damn it, I'm 25!), and the contestants will be singing one-minute selections from the play. We're doing the competition on Saturday afternoon, and then we're going into NYC proper on Sunday afternoon to see "Rent" on Broadway. My sister is treating me to a ticket, matinee showing.

I'm extremely excited... but there's one problem. I can not possibly afford the hotel prices around there. I was wondering if there's anyone who reads my LJ who lives in the region of NYC (within an hour of the city) and has a spare sofa or piece of floor where I could crash for the night? I'm very sweet, I do dishes, and I promise I won't shed on the carpet!

Also, even if you don't have space, but would like to maybe get together for coffee, to hang out, or just SQUEE over fandom stuff, I'm not going to be busy nonstop. Basically, aside from the competition and the play, I'm going to be a freebird in NYC for the weekend. Anyone want to get together?

So, if you can possibly play host to an overnight guest (or two), please let me know. I shall even come bearing a gift of a handcarved wand, and my sister crochets beautiful HP House scarves... not that I can technically volunteer her services...

Please let me know?

~P

What's your opinion on hostels? There's a decent one on 45th that's less than $40 a night. Also? Go see Altar Boyz if you get a chance. You will LOVE IT. ;)

You know my sister already saw Altar Boys... she's not going to take me there again, not when she can take me to see Rent.

And I've been to one hostel that was okay. I'll do it if I have to, but I'd really rather not. I don't trust regular hotels... skeebie stuff. I've actually travelled the country, staying at friends' houses. It's so much better... why stay in a hotel when you can visit a friend? When I went to Missouri, I stayed at three people's houses along the way, and I'd never met any of them in-person before I got to their houses... and they were all AWESOME. Had some great times. All HP slashers, actually. :D

See Rent and Altar Boyz.. eesh. ;) Hehehe. Unless you're leaving Sunday night? Have you ever seen Rent? I can't remember if you told me.

No, I totally agree. I prefer staying with friends than at a hotel or, especially, a hostel. First and foremost I'd rather be someplace with other people, and that feels more homely. Hotels don't do that for me.

Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. Seriously, if I could stay with someone, why pay to sleep in a cruddy hotel, where you can't even be 100% sure that the sheets are sanitary?

And seeing Rent AND Altar Boys would be nice... if I had the money to spare. Sadly, I don't, so the mission is to see Rent. :)

I need to see that the next time I'm in New York. I mean, hell, I spend enough time at Dodger Stages as it is. Seeing another show there won't kill me. LOL

...I'm working straight through the weekend, but I *am* 20 minutes from the city... it's just I'll be leaving for work at 5:30am and going to bed by 8pm and I don't know how my parents would feel about that :-/ Did you check hotel prices for North Jersey, not just the city?

Date: 2005-10-21 04:03 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com
Haven't checked prices there, but I'll try. But when I say I'm broke, I mean, zero-income right now. Nada, zilch, nothing. Every penny out... you get the idea. I wouldn't want to impose on someone if it might make the parents irritated, so don't even worry about it. I appreciate the fact that you even considered it. *hugs*

I am crushed that I won't be around this weekend. I have been in alabama all week, my dad died, but if I were around I would offer you a spot. Hell I'd even clean the bathroom! Sorry to miss you. Hope you have a great time and get back to the NYC area soon.

Awww, chances of me getting to NYC any other time are slim. This is a rare treat for me... it's SO expensive there! But perhaps, if I knew I had someone down there I could stay with, I could come more often. It's the cost of hotels that kills me.

I'm staying at http://www.hinewyork.org/ for $29 a night when I'm heading there in November. If it's anything like the one in LA at Santa Monica, then it's great for a bed, hot shower and a locker where you can put your stuff (with your own lock). When all you need is a place to park yourself to sleep, Youth Hostels are fabulous - just remember to take earplugs and an eyemask if you need to sleep. Hence my own ability to hand around in NYC!

Wish you could come down when I'm there (OMG - only 5 weeks now!), but it sounds like you'll be having a heap of fun with your sister. Now if someone would only buy me a matinee ticket to 'Spamalot', I'll be even happier :D

Hugs

Damn, that might be perfect! I wonder if my sister is willing to do something like that. You're a bloody genius! Besides, $30 is about as much as I could possibly afford. Although there's a chance that hotel prices will be lower outside the city. I'll look into it. *hugs*

Damn, I had mixed up your post with someone else's who I know to live out of the USA, and is coming to visit soon. I'm not sure where you live, exactly. Oh well.

But Squeeing is good! SQUEEE! Have you ever been to NYC?

Well, NYC is only a 6-hour drive away from me, so it's not too bad. But I'll need to be awake EARLY Saturday morning.

if you ever HAPPEN to come down to australia, youre welcome to crash at me place :D

Well, I'd love to visit Australia... however, right now, it's a bit outside my budget. :(

It sounds like you're going to have a really good time. Have fun at rent for me. :( I have never seen it. I'll be there when the movie comes out though. SQUEE! That should be awesome.

Yes, it should be muchly awesome. I just hope that the overnight accomodation-situation works itself out. Maybe we'll stay outside the city. I hope the prices are significantly lower in northern Jersey.

I seriously need to get rid of this icon now. It's too depressing.

Anyway, have you found a place to stay yet? My offer isn't very attractive, but I thought I'd make it, all the same... you and your sister are welcome to stay with me. :)

Advantages:
I have a free futon and couch!

Disadvantages:
I live near Princeton, NJ, which is just under two hours from NYC by train or bus. The bus will cost you $10 each way, from Port Authority Bus Terminal near Times Square. (Or the train would cost you $11 each way from Penn Station and requires a ride to/from the local train station, which I'm perfectly willing to give.) So for two people that's $40 and you could probably get a hostel room or whatever for that. And finally, I'm really very incredibly boring, so I'm not sure how high the entertainment value would be...

Date: 2005-10-21 06:20 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com
Hmmm... let me ask my sister. Princeton is quite a distance... but I'd much prefer to hang out with cool fandom people (and no, you're NOT boring!) than sleep in a hostel or Econo Lodge. E-mail me, and I can send you my phone number.

Well, I just read about your situation and happen to live 20 minutes away from the GW Bridge on the Jersey side. We are supposed to be having a Halloween party tomorrow night, and you would be welcome to come to! Just one word of warning though, they sent my youngest daughter home from High School today. She's running a fever and has very bloodshot eyes. Waiting to hear back from the doctor. I'm sure we could arrange for her to keep her distance. So if your interested in visiting our zoo/house let me know, (we have 4 cats, 2 dogs, 3 parakeets, and a bunch of tropical fish...so any allergies might have to be taken into consideration as well..Hope to hear from you soon. We have a dog here, used to have a cat, own a horse, and over the years have had more cats, mice, rats, gerbils, hampsters, birds, ginuea pigs, squirrels, snakes, fish... pets are not a problem! In fact, animals make me muchly happy! As long as you can handle my craziness (I swear, I'm sane... just a bit hyper), it ought to be a blast!

Let me call my sister and find out if she's cool with everything. We found a possible place at an Econo Lodge, but that's still money I really can't afford, and honestly... I don't trust hotels, no matter how many stars.

And SQUEEE! Halloween party! Shall I dress as Harry? I've got a costume! And my sister makes a grand Trelawney.

Send me an e-mail at jedi_mijan@yahoo.com, and we can figure out details... and if my sister's game (which I think she will be), I'll cancel the Econo Lodge (which would make me happy). Do you have a place to park?

Hey, you. I hope you're having/had a wonderful trip! I shall use my 'Wicked' icon.

So... I have a nearly-completed scarf calling your name. :D I'd love to know where to send it so that as soon as it is completely complete, I can send it on its merry way. I'd be much obliged if you'd drop me a line at my notasecretagent @ livejournal.com email address (any reply will come from my gmail, however, which is jessica[myreallastname] @gmail.com).

Again, hope you had a fantastic time in New York! I've never been myself, but I've heard it's a trip. :)

It's awesome. We watched Rent today, and we had the best time ever. Duhmom, who hosted my sister and me for the weekend, came with us with two of her daughters, and then (omg, it was incredible) she treated us out to dinner at the most expensive restaurant I'd ever been in. In fact, I'm still at her house.

And SQUEEEE! You have the scarf! I still think that cherry wood wand would suit you best. I have it, and I just keep thinking that it's perfect for you. Anyhow, I'll e-mail you when I get home. *glomps!*

Well, I've only been working there a few months, and I did walk around a little during my lunch break, but first it was too hot, and then it was too rainy, and ... and ... I'm lame.

I was thinking of going to the GoF premiere, but I'm really disorganized, and it seems like I should already have gotten the tickets in order to get in. I guess I should figure that out soon....

Yeah. That means I should contact the people I'll be *hopefully* going with. *meep*
