I just wanted to introduce you to my horse, Champ.

He's 16 hands high (that's very tall for a Quarterhorse), and is an absolutely darling horse with a playful personality, and a definite desire to please. He also LOVES the snow. I swear, he just likes to frolic. We get to the field, and he can't wait to get into the snow, which in most places, comes up past his knees and hocks. He's also got the most gorgeous tail, but my sister decided to braid it today, so you can't even see how nice it is. Oh, and the sun was in our eyes... he normally doesn't look quite that sleepy. LOL. Trust me, I'll be taking lots more pictures, so you'll get to see better. I can't wait until summer when he sheds his shaggy winter coat, and you can see how shiny his summer coat is. :D
I also have a video that my sister took of me riding. It's kinda shakey, and my sister had the sun behind me, instead of behind her when she positioned herself (silly person), but you can certainly see us gallop past. This is the video: http://members.cox.net/phoenixsong/potterart/Champ_Gallop.AVI (Be patient... it takes a moment to load.)
I'll hopefully have more videos and pictures soon.

Date: 2005-01-31 03:22 am (UTC)God, I miss riding so much. It's been at least eight years since I last rode.
Champ looks adorable, though. Do you usually ride Western or English? The saddle's English, but the bridle seems to be Western--I've often wondered if this might confuse a horse.

Date: 2005-01-31 08:03 am (UTC)But actually, Champ rides perfectly both English and Western. I had him tacked in English gear today. And actually, despite the fact that he was usually ridden Western by his previous owner, I think he responds better English. Last time, I rode him Western, and he was perfectly behaved then too. So really, either one is fine. And actually, it's not the gear that confuses a horse... it's the signals the rider gives. As long as your signals are clear, your horse should respond perfectly. :)

Date: 2005-01-31 12:19 pm (UTC)Oh and your horse is sooooo cute! I actually have never rode a horse before. Seems kind of scary but I'm sure it's loads of fun. The snow is really gorgeous too, I adore snow, do you happen to have any other photos of it?

Date: 2005-01-31 03:00 pm (UTC)And you've never ridden a horse? Oh my... we need to change that!
Riding CAN be scary... it depends on if you're riding a good horse or not. I've ridden some VERY ill-behaved horses. One in particular actually tried repeatedly to throw me off; she didn't succeed in ditching me, but she's thrown everyone else who has ridden her. However, Champ is a sweet-natured horse who actually loves to be ridden, and would never NEVER intentionally do something scary. Perfectly safe.

Date: 2005-02-01 01:08 am (UTC)And I could go on for hours too. He's got good conformation... not perfect, but almost no horse is perfect. His chest isn't narrow, but it isn't quite as wide as I like on a quarterhorse. (I like a horse with a very wide chest.) His withers are a little bit high, but that's partially his age, and really, his withers are quite normal. (I just like to ride bareback, and high withers hurt.) Beyond that, he has a good short/average neck, strong back, solid quarters, short sloping shoulder... good proportions. He's a pretty one. :)
Right now, the one thing that bothers me about him isn't HIM... the woman who boards him isn't feeding him enough for the level of activity... he's a big horse, and with the way I ride, he needs a good measure of grain. His ribs weren't showing when he arrived at this farm, but they're showing now. I'm NOT happy with that. I've already told her once to up the grain ration, but I don't think she's added enough.
Okay, that's enough ranting from me. I'll get more pics soon. :)

Date: 2005-02-05 01:52 am (UTC)*huggles* How're you doing? I'm still suffering post-Active-Duty-depression. Not having the best time of it. More on that later, but I've actually been sick almost the entire time since I've been home. In other news, I might be getting command of my own company. This is craziness.
Anyhow, I'll e-mail you my mailing address, but if you want, reply right back in my LJ. I've been enjoying using it lately. :)

Date: 2005-02-08 05:10 pm (UTC)I'm starting to get riding withdrawal. My instructor and really wonderful lesson pony (forward, smart, willing, and learning fast -- he occasionally freaked out, but that's a young herbivore for you) moved over an hour away in October, and I decided not to look for other prospects until spring. It's almost looking close enough....
