I know that the sexual orientation and gender identity demographics of my friends list are NOT the same as the demographics and statistics for the population at large. However, I'm curious... what ARE the demographics for my friends list?
Please, help me satisfy my own curiosity and vote. Gay, straight, it doesn't matter. Real life friend or fandom friend, it doesn't matter. I want as many people to vote as possible. I want to get as accurate a picture as I can of my Livejournal community.
Please pick the answers you most comfortably identify with. This is about how YOU define YOURSELF. If I missed an obvious choice that I should have included, please forgive me for that oversight. I tried to hit the most obvious ones that I know.
The poll is anonymous - the public will NOT be able to see who gave which answers.
Thank you!

Date: 2009-12-06 06:05 am (UTC)Fandom is highly non-hetero. But also, my fandom communities consist of a lot of slashers, and because I'm queer, I associate with other folks who associate the same way. A lot of my RL friends on here fall into the same groups as me.
But yeah, I love my LJ community. :D

Date: 2009-12-06 06:44 am (UTC)These types of questions always make me think I am being a bit dishonest in life because I most people assume I am heterosexual because I am married to a guy. Because we live in a hetero-normative society this assumption works to my advantage. However I always wonder if I should correct people...but in a professional context it can just complicate things. When you're on my situation, there's a fine line between defining your sexual orientation and just giving some people TMI.

And yeah, my usual answers involve a dissertation-worthy response.

Date: 2009-12-06 03:14 pm (UTC)The next poll?
Date: 2009-12-06 03:03 pm (UTC)Monogamous -- I am in a committed relationship that neither of us wishes to leave for a very long time.
Serially Monogamist -- I tend to have (relatively) brief relationships and when they end I find myself in a new one in a (relatively) brief time.
Swinger -- My partner and I have some arrangement that results in our having sex with other people.
Philosophically Polyamorous -- I believe that I can love more than one other person, but am not in a relationship like that right now.
Practicing Polyamorous -- I am in more than one relationship right now and all concerned parties are aware and okay with it, according to preset rules or expectations.
Polyfidelous -- I am in a closed multiple-partner relationship.
Some other thing not described above.
(Note: The above definitions are my understanding of the terms and may not describe all people who use that term. I am also obviously not completely versed in all possible terms. :) )

Date: 2009-12-06 03:15 pm (UTC)Re: The next poll?
Date: 2009-12-06 05:28 pm (UTC)There's a range between "philosophically polyamorous" and "practicing polyamorous" as described; having only one partner at any given time doesn't put polyamory into the "hypothetical" category, any more than being partnered with someone of the opposite sex makes one "philosophically bisexual."
It also makes a difference whether the poll is asking "what relationship(s) are you in right now" or "what relationship(s) do you seek?" There are single, polyfidelitous people.
Poly has some of the same problems as non-het sexualities: if they're not active at the moment, heteronormative society believes they don't exist.
(Also, whole quiz leaves out asexuality. Which utterly baffles me, so I have no idea how one would place it in the quiz, but I do know several people who are asexual. Apparently there are types? Maybe?)

Yes there are. That would be my Mother. Going on 20 years now. And masturbation is Right. Out. The woman is practically a nun.

Date: 2009-12-06 06:06 pm (UTC)Fandom is awesome. Most people I know IRL throw a hissy fit if you insinuate that they're even a little bit gay. :D ♥

Date: 2009-12-06 07:02 pm (UTC)I have always defined myself as "straight, but not narrow." I think "heteroflexible" totally covers that. Thanks for this!

Date: 2009-12-06 09:31 pm (UTC)Also (taking off on a completely random tangent here), I personally don't like the idea of gendered power in the spiritual/religious sense. Spiritual experiences for me usually involve some sort of nature-based/meteorological event. I know Gaia has a women's spiritual group that meets on a bimonthly basis, and I feel like I should go and check it out sometime... but then again I don't.
Interesting poll! :)

Date: 2010-01-01 08:48 am (UTC)The gender questions made me smile. I'm rather tomboyish in some ways, but that's more because my Grandfather was the one who looked after me while my Mom and grandma worked. His idea of entertainment for a kid were regular treks to the local hardware stores and building pigeon and rabbit traps (non-lethal, so they could be kept as pets) as well as any other construction projects that were handy. Dresses and other fancy clothes either didn't survive the construction projects or could get you injured, so I came to dislike wearing them.
I read slash mainly because the mainstream het romance books bore me to death. I don't like being able to figure out the plot and sequence of events less than 30 pages in.
