Okay, so for the past two Memorial Day weekends, Fi and I have gone to Heartland Pagan Fest.  This year, however, the prices are insanely high (almost $200 for the weekend), and we've been distracted by the far-less-expensive alternative:  ConQuest, the local Sci-fi/fantasy/geekery convention.

So, this year, there shall be no naked dancing around enormous bonfires while we drum and celebrate deep into the night.  However, there shall be Hobbits and Jedi and Trekkies - OH MY!

The only question is... do any local or regional geeks want to join us?  You can still register for ConQuest at the door, and at $55 for the weekend, it's a fraction of the cost of Harry Potter conventions.  For those who can't afford the hotel, we have enough room for SOME people to stay at our house (at the discretion of [profile] fiona_fawkes  and me - NOT an open invite for the whole world, sorry).  Our house is just a couple of miles from the convention center.  There will be geekery and room parties and costumes and panels and more geekery.

Anyone interested?  I heard a rumor that at least ONE person (*pokes [livejournal.com profile] dramedy *) was interested, if she could find people to drive down with her from a nearby state.  Come on, people!  Who's feeling spontaneous and geeky?

There's a way I could take the train and then the Megabus. but that costs money too D: and it would take all Saturday to travel, and all Monday to travel.

I should just tell him that if I get to go I won't whip out my Prop 8 Protest sign or my Bettie Page posters out of my closet, and I won't leave my pin-up books lying on my bed, lol.

Well, you could also remind him that the part of Kansas City where you'll be staying is EXTREMELY liberal. My county voted 70% for Obama. There are Human Right Campaign stickers all over the place. This is not a place to worry about.

I know that. he's more worried about me driving alone somewhere than where I'll be. that's what Mom said at least. and she recommended that I try a less forceful approach, lol, and try reasoning him into it.

I'm trying to get a hold of my friend who *likes* to drive and see if she'll go with me but I don't think that they have Mon. off at her school. :/ and Mom said she'd feel better if I could just get someone to go PART of the way even. So I have a friend going to STL, and I am going to try and get him to join in. :D

OK, SO.

My friend who doesn't mind driving is *considering* going. The problem? She doesn't really want to go to the convention. She doesn't *read* sci-fi, and she's never watched anime. She likes Star Trek, Stargate SG-1, and other sci-fi *shows* but she's not really into the whole *convention* idea. I can probably sell her on one afternoon, but not the whole weekend? So I'm trying to figure out stuff to do outside the convention in KC and I'm drawing a blank. I was thinking the zoo? but that'll be ~*SUPER*~ busy on the weekend, esp. Memorial Day. and the Royals are in STL that weekend D: D: Any suggestions to lure her down there??

OOOH, let's see.

There's World of Fun amusement park. There's the Plaza, which has lovely shopping. There are parks for hiking and swimming. There's the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the Jazz Museum (both are awesome). There's some of the best barbecue you've ever eaten.

What does she like? I guarantee I can find something.

And tell her that there will be plenty of stuff at the convention itself for people who simply like a few geeky sci-fi shows. And tell her that the best part is the ROOM PARTIES. She doesn't even need to register for that part!

adfjglk AMUSEMENT PARK!! OOOH I WANNA GO!! The water rides are my favorite. I think I'll suggest that to her. And I'd really like to see the Negro Leagues Museum. Maybe Saturday morning we'll go to the NLM, and wander around the Plaza, and then I'll go to the convention (there are 3 things I want to go to, all in a 3hr block in the same room, lol XD) and she can nap or something and then after we'll go to some room parties/go out on the town/something, and Sunday we can go to the AMUSEMENT PARK! and ride RIDES and sit in the POOL and yeah. and then we'd come back to hang out after we got bored of the park, and it would be AWESOME!

or maybe she'd like the Jazz Museum?

OH I hope she wants to go! :D

The Jazz Museum and Negro Leagues Baseball Museum are connected, so you can do both in the same trip. Those aren't too far from the convention.

Worlds of Fun is adjacent to Oceans of Fun, which is a water amusement park. It might be warm enough for you to go to the water park. It's going to be sunny with highs of 80 degrees or higher. That's a bit outside of the city, and further away from the convention.

Either way, trust me, there's stuff to do. :D

I saw their website, it looks awesome.

I never doubted it, I just didn't know it :D :D

Oh, and do you like roller coasters? World of Fun has some FREAKIN' HUGE roller coasters. Seriously.

I personally like water rides (something about having water there makes me insanely more comfortable. It's weird, but hey) but I'm slowly getting acclimated to roller coasters. I haven't been on one in years, though, so we'll see if I don't get too freaked out to do it.

Well, the entire water park opens on Saturday:

There's also some water log rides in the amusement park.

The Museums are REALLY nice. If you like baseball at all, the Baseball museum is really awesome. There's so much to read and see. It walks through the entire history of the Negro Leagues up to the time when they integrated them. I'm not really into jazz, so that wasn't as big of a deal to me, but it was really nice, too. But I loved the Negro Leagues Baseball museum.

No, but my bff isn't much of an art girl. idk if we'll be staying over Sun. night, we haven't discussed it. I want to leave Sat/Friday night and return Monday afternoon, but IDK what SHE wants to do, and when her classes are.

I'm pretty sure we're going :D :D She said yes, albeit a little unenthusiastically, but I'm sure I can win her over :> :> Now it's just a matter of when we're going, and what car we're taking and stuff like that. but I'm a tentative yes, barring unforeseen circumstances.
