...or anyone else with general geek loyalty... which is pretty much my whole f-list, so... EVERYONE!!!

NASA is holding a contest to name the new node to the International Space Station.

One of the options is "Serenity."

VOTE HERE:  http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/name_ISS/index.html

Also... Last night I went to the movies with a friend of mine, and we watched "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."  It was really really good.  Just had to say.  Definitely worth a watch.  Very different.  I like different.  I recommend it.

Now, go vote for "Serenity!"

I'm guessing it will be named that, since it's at 82% right now. ;) I've never watched the show (ironically, as I'm a huge fan of Joss), but no names there actually stood out to be at all, so I voted for it.

I loved that movie! It is now my favorite movie! I've been waiting for one to come along for a few years now. I hope it wins all the Oscars it was nominated for.

Ugh. I voted against on principle a few days ago (I hate vote-bombing), but mostly because it makes no sense as part of the ISS.

I think I liked Earthrise best.

Hrm. I think Serenity has it.

I like the first from the "top five suggestions": MUDKIP :D :D :D

That does make me giggle, as a Pokemon player. if I were NASA, I would reject it on principle, though.

I don't like that it didn't say how the top-suggested names stacked up against the pre-suggested names--if that makes any sense. How well is Mudkip doing against Serenity? We just don't know.

Well, I didn't find a place where you could vote on individual-suggested names so I'd say they rank pretty low.

Haha this reminds me of it that there was a similar naming vote for a bridge they built a couple of years ago where they made the mistake of not previously censoring the suggested names and the bridge almost ended up being named after Chuck Norris. And then, when the name won on the internet voting, they made some excuse that Chuck Norris isn't yet dead and there's a law here that you can only name places after people post-mortem, but still, would've been a bit hilarious -- mostly because half of the people living there wouldn't even know how to pronounce the name. :P

Voted for Legacy. Serenity is a pretty word, but not when it's being used because it's a TV show that a lot of people like. NASA should've thought of that, I think.

After I voted I kicked myself because one of tehtop suggestions was Tranquility and I like that one better.

Then again, what's the liklihook I'll visit the space station? what right have I to name it?

Awww, I just thought it was fun!

Besides, "Serenity" seemed to match the names of the other two nodules best, too.

Serenity matches well--so does Tranquility, and they have a similar meaning. Legacy comes close enough, I think.

Popular television just annoys me, is all. Firefly and Serenity and Dr. Who--they'll never get my attention. Fun is all well and good, but we're naming the Internatonal Space Station based on--not necessarily in your case, but I would be willing to bet that mose of the people who voted for Serenity fit that bill: "omg!!1!! taht show is teh best!" without any real regard to the magnitude of the accomplishment that we are naming. I just thought it ought to have a better legacy than "yay tv!"

...after choosing my icon I am forced to admit that Star Trek is/was popular televison and I love it.

LOL... and I feel there's nothing wrong with applying a bit of pop culture to science.

What's in a name? Is not a space ship by any other name still capable of Warp 7?

Your icon is wrong--to BOLDLY go!

OH WAIT FUCK. I GET IT NOW. DAMN. Obviously you win this round.

Psh, maybe I'm just an elitist. *shrug* Although one would expect a space station to stay in orbit rather than prancing about at Warp 7.

My mother is amusing: you know how a car in Drive will move forward if you're holding neither the brake nor the accelerator? That speed is "Ahead Full Impulse" according to her. /random

MUAHAHAHA! Icon FTW!!!

And yes, a space station would stay in place, but I indicated a "space ship," thereby rendering your space station argument null and void. :D

Random: Whenever I'm maneuvering a cart or something else around people, I tend to say, "Maneuvering thrusters only, Mr. Sulu."

Cool!

Also, my cousin named his daughter Serenity. His sister's daughter is named Zoe.
