I've got a job!  A real job!  But a FUN job!  They're going to give me gadgets, gizmos, and flammable chemicals, and then turn me loose to corrupt the minds of young children. The world will never be the same.

I'm going to be working, literally, as a Mad Scientist and Mad Science.  It's a company that goes around to local schools and youth groups and teaches science to children... the fun way.  I get to educate young minds!  I get to use caustic chemicals!  I get to run activities!  I get to teach the children of freakin' KANSAS that SCIENCE is GOOD.  It brings a tear to my eye.  Really.

Here's the website for the company: MAD SCIENCE!
I get to be one of the scientists.  They actually pay pretty well.  Right now, it's part time, but they'll he hiring more full-timers soon, and they hire their full-timers from their part-timers.  I think I'll be able to work my way up quickly.  But mostly, I'm just excited that this is going to be the best freakin' job EVER.

In the meantime, I'm also tutoring math and science.  I've got a couple of students, and seeing as I started tutoring about 14 years ago, I can charge $30 per hour, and people happily pay it (plus tips, sometimes) for my amount of experience and the quality of the teaching.  (Apparently, I'm really good at this.)  I'm tutoring this one young woman (college student) who was convinced by her teachers that she has a math/science learning disability.  I'm very rapidly convincing her that it's NOT her... it was her teachers who didn't teach her well.  She's getting the hang of it very quickly, and we've covered three chapters of physics and all the supporting math in a span of four hours.  I'm very proud of her, and I'm determined that she's not just going to pass, but she's going to get a GOOD grade on this course.

Anyway, in other news, my mother is visiting me, and I'm about to go to a Kansas City Royals game (baseball) with her.  This afternoon, after the game, I have job training.  After job training, I have a softball practice.  (Oh, did I mention?  I'm coaching a softball team now!)  And then, we're having a couple of fandom friends come over for wine and snacks.

Gotta go, loves!

Yay for the job! My student love it when our local science magic bloke comes in.

KC Royals, yeah? Please tell me you've not deserted the Red Sox. ;)

Desert the Red Sox??? FUCK NO. Just going to local baseball games because I love baseball... and the seats are cheap. *grins*

i was quite positive you wouldn't but i wanted to make sure. ;) isn't it amazing how cheap tickets can sometimes be. i went to soooo many baseball games in cleveland.

Yeah, the most expensive Royals tickets aren't much more than the CHEAPEST Red Sox tickets. Sad, really. But that's how it goes.

Can I use your icon? *puppy eyes*

Having just moved to New York, I agree with your icon totally... my kids are afraid they will get picked on for supporting the Red Sox and Patriots in Yankees and Bills country.

Oooh, i lived in NYC for three years. As a rabid Red Sox and Pats fan, I incurred enough wrath. Hopefully most people will leave kidlets alone..say something like they don't know better. ;) And, I always found Jets fans to be worse than Bills fans.

Best of luck in NY!

I've always just kind of accepted the cat-macro take over of the world as normal, but then my mom said to me one day, "OMG WHY IS CAT-MACRO TALK CAN TAKE OVER TEH WORLDZ?" and I finally realized... it really has taken over the world. What a weird, cat-pwned world!

Your job sounds so much fun. Not many people I know actually enjoy their jobs but it really sounds like you are going to--congratulations! Yay!

Michelle, if you haven't read the web comic Girl Genius, you need to read it because you're now officially a Spark.

...and now that I'm done plugging the Phoglios, CONGRATS!!! Having a job you love is a wonderful thing! Now, if you can get them to let you dress up as a Hobbit and teach Mad Science...

No joke... my mom wouldn't let me try out for softball because she was afraid I would become a lesbian. (You know, instead of straddling the fence and all...)
In high school, I had a major crush on one of the soccer players. She and her girlfriend gave me my first kisses at the prom. They thought it was cute that I had never been kissed by either sex, so...

Anyway, you know the saying: If you can't be an athlete, be an athletic supporter.

*grins* It seems like a fun little thing. I'll also want another job to supplement it though, depending on how many gigs I get. But... YAY!

Speaking of income and money, have you decided if you're good with $600 plus an airline voucher, or if you want $800? I feel like an awful person if I still owe people money.

Woohoo!!! Go you!!!!

*dances in a celebratory fashion*

If you need ideas, or videos for them to watch, I suggest you ignore such idiots as Bill Nye The Science Guy, and take a leaf from the Book of Brainiac - Who knows, they *might* let you blow up a microwave or two... If it was for Educational Purposes...

Of course, the overall plan is very simple. Grab that job, get yourself some health insurance, get yourself repaired, and start saving for the trip back to the UK :)

LOL... Mad Science is an established company, and they have specific lessons and experiments that they demonstrate and teach. But they've got a lot, and it looks like lots of fun.

And yes... must get back to the UK. :D

That sounds like such an awesome job! And very important, too - in this day and age, educating kids about science is so crucial, since so few of them are informed, let alone interested...

I'm getting involved with a program my uni runs, whereby we students take over year 9 classes for an hour a week to get them in one science projects and try and make them interested. It's going to be interesting.

Agh, and where were you when I was in highschool. I sucked at everything that had anything to do with Math, and I went through so many tutors and so many teachers you can't even imagine. Eventually, they all gave up and told me that I am too disinclined towards Math to bother.. ;)

good stuff!
