You can access free wireless at a lot of pubs - I think Wetherspoons pubs (which are otherwise not the best, but not awful, just a bit soulless) usually have free access. Universities usually need a code and password to access their free wireless - the conference might be able to supply them. But then, internet cafes are very cheap too.
www.cbfsms.co.uk (or possibly .com) sends free texts within the UK - not sure if it sends them abroad or not.

BTW, if you're buying entry tickets to places yourself and you're going to the Tower of London, and there are three or more of you, get a family ticket, as it isn't much more than the ticket price and it also gets you free entry to the Hampton Court, Kensington and Kew Palaces.
