Okay, so I never make a Christmas List.  In fact, I can't remember the last time I made a list.  Why?  Because I don't like asking for things, and most of the time, I don't feel like there's anything I really need.  I have clothing (albeit not much), food, and a roof over my head.  What more do I need?  Well, this year, I've discovered that I do have a need for certainly worldly possessions.  So, not that 99% of the people on my Friends List would be able to get me anything (mostly because you're nowhere near where I live, and I wouldn't want to ask people for stuff anyway), but I've decided that for my own mental well-being, I want to post my wish-list.  Actually, it's almost a need-list at this point.

~ A new computer.  I'm using my mother's desktop right now, and the second-hand laptop that I use for writing is on the brink of dying.  In fact, even the paint is peeling off, and the screen flickers.  I'm afraid of losing my new fic, too.  And seeing as I'm moving, having a functional computer of my own might be important.
~ Printer/Scanner.  My printer is completely dead.  And I don't have any way to upload art anymore either.  Tis driving me crazy, especially since I had a recent surge of HP sketching that I can't display.
~ Gryffindor Quidditch Robes.  I can carve wands.  I have an awesome scarf that someone knitted for me in exchange for a wand.  I even made a brand new Nimbus 2000 that looks fucking amazing.  Solid birch.  But I can't sew for shit, so hence, no robes.
~ Clothing.  Seriously, I own two pairs of jeans, one pair of black work trousers (which actually were the $16 ones I bought from Wal-Mart for my Harry costume), and only one remaining pair of khakis that don't have holes in them, but they've got a stain so they're worthless anyway.  And shirts... I've got plenty of t-shirts, but almost nothing to wear for my new job.  I am *so* screwed.
~ New Glasses.  Mine are scratched and even have tiny chips in the glass from flying debris from when I was track-commanding a tank last winter.  Don't ask.
~ Contact lenses.  I'm on my last pair, and I've stretched one-year's worth of lenses into two years already.
~ A tune-up for my car.  I can't afford it, but damn, my car needs it right now.
~ A way out of the Army so that I can actually have a life without living in fear of being uprooted every other week.
~ Some new furniture for my new bedroom in my new appartment.  Specifically a small night-stand.  I'll pester my mother for this one.  *grins*
~ Trip to England.  I want to go so badly.  I was going to go last winter when I got back from OBC, but it never happened due to unforseen circumstances.  It was one of my biggest wishes.
~ To get my knee fixed.  I injured it three years ago, and it keeps getting worse.  Some days it's fine, but most days, I can't even walk without pain, and I certainly can't run without pain.  It's even given out a few times.  But I've been a long-distance runner for 12 years, and I'm completely addicted to running.  It's part of who I am, so I keep doing it.  Not every day like I used to, but as often as my knee can take it.  And five minutes after I get back from a run, my knee is so swollen that I can't bend it, and I can barely put weight on it.  But I don't have health insurance, so I can't do a damn thing about it yet.  It sucks to be me.
~ Enough money to afford the cost of living, seeing as the Army has screwed over my career, my life, and everything else, and my savings are almost gone.
~ Socks.  Seriously.  I love socks.  Warm woollen socks.  One can never have enough socks.  Alas, another Christmas has come and gone, and I've not received a single pair.  People will insist on giving me books.

So, there's my Christmas List.  It's a bit different than most lists, I'm guessing, but it's what I want.  Eventually, I might want simple things that I don't have, like a CD player, a TV of my own, or even a digital camera that works.  But in the meantime, I've got priorities.  That's life, and there you have my Christmas List, 2005.  Happy Christmas.

~P

Socks, eh? Should I start calling you Dobby?

Does Ivy come thick enough to make a wand out of?

Date: 2005-12-06 09:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com
No, I'm not Dobby, but I do like socks. And I've never seen a piece of ivy thick enough for a wand, but it's possible. I'd have to look into it. I'd have to go looking for ivy, and I'm betting the carving process would be much harder.

Well damn. I was just trying to go along with JKR's pattern of using the druid chart by your birth month, October is Ivy.

I had no idea... where did you get the list of trees by birth month? My Druid-based references don't have any lists like that. I'm curious now.

Aside from seeing this in various occult books, JKR has it on her website. Let me see if I can find it in text format...

Ah cool. I don't often go to her website, mostly because I've got so many friends who do, I hear almost every major new thing as soon as it's up anyway. But that's a cool list. What books have you seen it in?

From: [identity profile] destinyfroste.livejournal.com
You know, of course now that I need to find the list I cannot remember what books I have read it in. I found one book though:

de Pulford, Nicola. The Book of Spells. Hauppauge, NY: Barron's Educational Series, 1998.

It is the first of two books, this one has a black cover with silver writing (the second is the reverse) and a silver ribbon to tie the book shut. It is on page 16 under the heading: Sacred Trees and Plants. They list the Celtic Months as well as the dates we associate with them. I was born in the Celtic month of Gort. Hmmm...I like October better.

From: [identity profile] destinyfroste.livejournal.com
Oh, and in case you wanted to know.

You were born in the Celtic month of Coll and your tree is Hazel.

From: [identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com
LOL... I actually knew my Celtic month and tree. I just didn't know the others. I'll have to go looking for that book.

Are you doing anything interesting for Solstice this year?

On the military issue, one of the professional magazines for libraries ran a book/resource article on military folks. I think someone else may have mentioned this to you before, but it can't hurt to mention again...

Have you looked at this website / called this number?

The GI Rights Hotline (800) 394-9544
They have a section on getting out.

In advance... "Happy Christmas"

Darling, you might have just given me the key to one of the things on my list. Although I was already starting some of the processes listed on that site, now I've got some guidance. Thank you.

I can *easily* and honestly claim MOST of the things on that list. I'm gay. I AM a conscientious objecter. I've been having headaches and nightmares from the army-related stress, trouble eating, stomach problems, and other psychological issues because they've fucked with me so much. I've been discriminated against because of religion. And... oh yeah, I've got a completely fucked up knee. Discharge? Sounds like a good plan. Plus, seriously, the Army WOULD be better off without me. I rock the boat too much.

*poke, poke*

You know that there's something on that list that will be soon on it's way to you in the mail!

*squee*

I'd offer you my old laptop, but it is now almost dead too, hence the new one. Perhaps with the new job you might have enough spare cash at the end of the day to do something kewl and fill in some gaps from that list!

And SQUEEE! SOCKS! (I figured, that was the one thing on the list I'd actually get, and I had to post *something* I'd get to make me feel better.)

Meh... I can't really get you any of those... but if you have a paypal account I'll happily send you some money for Christmas which you can use to towards any of those things that you so wish.

It may not arrive until just after Christmas though; I don't get paid again until the 20th and then I'll have to transfer some money to my paypal account which will take another few days.

Sweetie, you don't need to send me money. Don't worry about it. You need your money for your own things. I'm not destitute, nor am I out on the streets. I just felt the sudden urge to put my little wish-list out in the open because I'd never done that. I don't expect people to get me anything... except maybe a pair of socks, which really do make me happy.

I'd be more than happy to send you a pair (or 2) of socks! (because I can't afford any of the rest either). And just think, they'd be from Paris... Oooh, French socks. How cool!
And I'm totally serious. :)

SQUEEE!!! SOCKS! Seriously, I love socks. Warm, soft, fuzzy socks with all sorts of different colours and patterns. But not "toe-socks" that have little "fingers" for each toe. Those are evil. *nods*

I agree on the evilness of toe socks. Do you have an address to which I can send them? And I promise not to stalk. Because I'm not allowed in the USA with my current passport.

What size clothes do you wear? I have quite a few dress shirts left over from private school, but I do believe I'm a bit larger than you :) (but on the off -chance, i'm sure some of the pants could be hemmed...?

Also, btw, I'm totally willing to open negotiations for a quidditch robe as long as you don't want it anytime in the very near future :)

I'm 5'1" tall. Short. My preferred trouser size is 30" waist, 30" inseam. I've got shoulders like a guy though, so I don't often fit women's dress shirts, and a solid ribcage, even though I'm not fat. Actually, I'm "big boned" in the technical sense... I've got a sturdy frame, and a fair amount of muscle, but very little body fat, if you can picture. But seriously, I think that after my next paycheque, I'll be able to hit the after-Christmas sales and buy what I need for clothes. The computer will have to wait, but for clothing, I think I'll be okay.

(Psst, of course I can picture, we were roommates, remember?) ;D

Not a problem, I'm just about to send off a load of clothes to the thrift store and if you needed any shirts I could pass them along instead since I feel bad about tossing nice clothes (which is why I've held onto them for so long, LOL).

*headdesk* This is why screen names are a terrible thing... I keep mixing them up! Because one screen name looks like another completely unrelated screen name, and since I've had almost no sleep lately, my brain is mixing them all up. *cries* I'm sorry! I remember now!

The question is... how much would it cost you to mail stuff? I don't want you to have to spend money to send things.

Bwahaha, no worries ;D Yeah, because "eruantale" looks so much like "altera" when written, and sounds so much like "sha-von" when said aloud... NOW YOU KNOW MY SEKRIT IDENTITY OMG!1!1!11!1! ;)

Eh, shipping is peanuts compared to what I pay for lunch at work every day and gas money *g*. I just checked my closet, I definatley have one blouse (size L, cranberry colored) that's too short on me (comes to just my waist and I'm 5'9", so it might be okay on you). I know it had a green twin, but it's possible I've already given that away... I'll double check to see if there's anything else and get back to you :)

Ouch. That made me feel quite guilty for wanting stupid, superfluous stuff for Christmas. But seriously, I think that if you got that list publicized in your area, you'd find yourself literally flooded with gifts. (Well, I guess it depends on the community you live in, but I know that if a list like that was in my local newspaper, the person would end up with more socks than anyone could shake a stick it, as well as some of just about everything else except the trip to England and the Gryffindor Quidditch robes.) About not being able to scan sketches — I see that you don't have a functional digital camera, but would you be able to borrow one from someone to photograph the sketches and get them on the computer? I have a friend whose mother is a professional animator, and she uses a digital camera to get drawings onto her computer.

Also, I know this isn't as pressing a need, but I'm getting an iPod for Christmas, which means that I won't be using my CD player anymore. Would you like it? I'd like to be able to do something.

By the way, I got your card, but I've been working so many hours, I haven't had the energy to reply when I've gotten home at night. Retail at the Christmas season sucks monkey balls. :p

How have you been?
