So, tonight, I'm going to be giving out candy at the local mall dressed as our favourite boy wizard.  I don't know whether to be excited about having another excuse to be Harry, or scared that I was asked *specifically* by the manager of CVS to play Harry.  Am I missing a message here?

Oh, and...
This is your public service announcement:

Before I get to the mall today, I'm going to stop by a local blood drive and bleed out a bit for the cause.  What cause?  Just everyday accidents, surgeries, and other requirements for blood that people across the country have.  Just because there hasn't been a national disaster doesn't mean that the need for blood stops.  Almost every year, there's a shortage.  If you're a healthy adult, please, donate.  It doesn't take long, and really, it doesn't hurt much.  (And before you ask, yes, I'm very phobic of needles, and I can still handle it.)  The commitment is minimal, and you could be saving a life.

~P

Wow, I'm seriously impressed that you're needle-phobic and still donate.

Have fun at the mall!

Are you sure you want to donate blood on the same day? Kids can be rowdy.

Gah, isn't halloween over yet? seems like people have been going on and on and on about it in their LJ's for weeks now.

I suppose the fact that it has been November for a little bit over 6.5 hours now means I'm well and truly over this crazy American tradition.

Would be a blood doner if they actually would accept my blood. Apparently it's not good enough for our blood bank. ah well.

I would donate blood...if I weighed enough. ^^;

It's really awesome that you're donating blood, even though you're phobic of needles.

Yay for you giving blood! I'm eligible to give another pint, as of Saturday. Will get on it as soon as I can find time in my schedule - since I tend to get woozy, I can't squeeze it in on the way to work. Good for you for doing it! You get extra candy tonight. *g*

yay for you! i always appreciate it when people give blood. i've spent more than my share of time in the hospital and used more than my share of blood. i'm not eligable to donate because of my various medical issues, but i lurve people that can and do. ♥

and i am going to send you an email (hopefully soon, but i am still a bit swamped with other RL stuff) with some links to pics from twh. i assume you've seen draco's and lucius'

Let's see...I think I have about two weeks left before I can donate blood again. Go you!

They don't want my blood (type I diabetic, not very good control), but I'm always impressed when other people give. When I had the chance, I used to volunteer and give out cookies during drives. Then I had a guy faint and that was so, so, so not cool.

I feel the same way, my sister used to donate (I never did due to anemia) and one day, they refused her blood because he iron count was so low. Am trying to persuade full of iron blokey to do it instead.

I hope you had fun bleeding. And you make a very cute Potter. I wonder how many little girls are going to fall in love?

Probably because I'm a vegetarian, I'm constantly anemic. They won't let me donate blood. :( I just give money when I can. I think it's awesome that you do, though. There's definitely a need.

(I'm not sure if you've sent me your address or not, but if you did, I haven't gotten it. Perhaps it was eaten by my spam filter. Anyhow, I'd love to get your scarf to you in plenty of time before GoF opens, so if you want to send or re-send your address, that would be sweet. It's done, by the way. :) )

No fags allowed, though.

Well, it's still Halloween here for another 45 minutes, so it's not that unreasonable. Some places did trick-or-treat tonight, and some did it yesterday to take advantage of the weekend. As for making a big deal about it... I just think it's one of the more amusing, light-hearted holidays. Costumes, candy, and no requirement of visiting cranky, senile relatives. :D

Simple fainting isn't a big deal... but the last time I donated, I had a really nasty episode. The needle slipped or something and hit a nerve. I tried to tell the nurse, but she told me to wait a moment while she did something. Then, instead of taking it out right away, she fiddled around with it, causing the reaction to get much worse. I passed out cold, and was out for a while. I felt so sick. I'm never letting *that* nurse draw my blood again.

Well, no girls swooned, but I had a few parents call me a "he". Although a couple of kids were pretty impressed, I think.

Yeah, that kinda irritates me. But they allow dykes. *waves queer-chick flag*
Actually, they have a TON of restrictions, not just gay guys. The list is huge.

Aww, awesome! Sadly, I haven't finished the wand yet. I think I can do it tomorrow... I still haven't found exactly the right branch. Can you send me an e-mail at jedi_mijan@yahoo.com with your address, and the exact colour that you wanted for your wand? (I remember that you wanted a 4.5 inch hand-grip, and approximately an 11 to 12 inch shaft.) I'll reply back with my address. Sound good?

LOL. Our idea of a lighthearted holiday is to stop work for half a day, drink like fishes, spend millions betting on a horse race, then feel too embarassed/sick/half arsed to go back to work!

Of course, some of us manage to sit at our desks and do work instead = guaranteed time when nobody will disturb you!

hugs!

Hmmm, I could use that type of holiday every so often... but that's why we have baseball games and Superbowl Sunday.

*hugs back*

I have an enormous fear of needles as well and I did a little while ago, so well done you! Shame you have can only donate every 3 or 4 months, because I'd be ready to do it a lot more often.

But well done!!

Well, they forbid people who use drugs, people who have had risky sex partners, etc. They just go by broad category. By sheer statistics alone, by demographic group, lesbians have the lowest rates of most STD's, and gay men have higher rates. Those are just statistics though, and by no means reflects upon every individual within those groups. On one hand, I can see why they forbid certain groups, but on the other hand, it's stupid. Of course, if you've even *been* to Africa, or have spent too much time in Great Britain, or too much time out of the USA and Canada, then you can't donate either.

I've been feeling bad since July cos I've missed a couple of blood donor sessions; it's why it took me so long to get my tattoo done in the first place. I usually try not to miss one, so it's nice to see someone else who cares about it :-)

Yeah, I've had two tattoos, and the year interim of no donations made me feel a bit guilty. I've been donating since the week I turned 17, and I'm 25 now, so subtract two years from the total. But I love my tattoos. :D

Last year my kids were dressed as Hary and Hermione.

I'd like to donate as well, but I need to wait until I get bloodwork back. I do get anemic, but this time it might be something else.

Which is fine, in theory, but what I don't understand is that they test the blood so thoroughly that I really can't see what the actual problem would be. I mean, just because a group is low-risk doesn't mean that the blood won't have a disease in it. I understand the need for safety, but that is needed for any blood that they take.

Dunno, just bothers me. I won't donate blood because I'm gay. I technically could, because I haven't actually had formal sex yet, but I get so irritated by the policy that I won't until they change it.

Also, especially because my best friend has a rare blood type and they won't take his. The Blood Center keeps calling him and he eventually told them to stop because he's a fag and they don't want him. The lady on the line got real quiet and said she'd take him off of the list.

Date: 2005-11-02 02:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com
Sadly, I don't think they're going to change it. And you're right... they test all the blood they get, so there's no reason to disclude certain groups.

*shiver* That's the very definition of no-fun right there.

Anyway, I guess because I was the one watching him it seemed worse.

Date: 2005-11-02 09:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com
Yeah, from what people have told me, it's much worse watching. I've actually passed out a few times, and most often, it's just a moment of light-headedness, a brief black-out, then you open your eyes and you feel fine... and surprisingly relaxed. Doesn't hurt at all. It's almost like standing up too fast. But that *one* time REALLY sucked, but that was because the nurse was an idiot. The rest of the time... not a big deal at all. And they give you extra cookies too. :D

What's even funnier is that I'm an organ donor. Which is something they have even less time to test.
