So, we're back from Trek Fest, and HOLY SHIT. Okay, where do I begin?  And let me tell you something... this entry is LONG, but seriously, I'm telling you, READ TO THE END OF THIS.

EDIT:  Okay, I just noticed that the Trek Fest news has linked my little LJ post.  So if anyone is wandering over here from there... hi!  I didn't write this with any intent for it to be a proper write-up or article.  This is just my crazy little fan-blog where I occasionally flail, rant, and write.  It's not professional.  It's highly illogical.  I wrote it in the backseat of my car on the road home from Riverside while a friend traded driving with me for a little while.  But hey, if you're here, have a cup of tea (Earl Grey, hot), and have a read.

We arrived on Friday night. Half of our group was staying in a hotel up near Iowa City, but four of us were staying right in Riverside, and the Riverside Hotel and Casino. The Iowa City group stopped off up there, and the rest of us got down to the hotel.

Just as we were getting settled in, I got a phone call from [livejournal.com profile] daystarsearcher , whose ride had broken down three miles north of Riverside. So, [livejournal.com profile] sphynxle and I got back into the car and swung up to pick her up. (Side note: I love it when fandom is just THERE for each other. Fandom has been there for me when I needed help, and I just like the fact that people are AROUND and you know folks will be there. It's a warm fuzzy sort of feeling.)

Anyway, we stop by downtown Riverside so [livejournal.com profile] daystarsearcher can drop off flyers for the video/media project she's doing, and got a chance to see some of the little events that have already started. We checked out the museum, which is full of all sorts of random Star Trek stuff, talked to some locals, and… okay, here's the first bit of MAJOR geekery: There's a Toyota Prius done up as a SHUTTLECRAFT. Seriously, you need to see this thing. This guy, Willie, has tricked out his Prius and turned it into a Trekkie's vehicular wet dream.  The owner is nowhere to be seen, but I admit... I may have hugged the car.

We get back to the hotel, where we determine that [livejournal.com profile] daystarsearcher will stay the night, we grab sandwiches, change into costumes at the insistence of several crew members, and then we go to head into downtown Riverside for more geekery.

As we're walking through the hotel lobby, as a group, I'm kinda at the front of the group, and I literally do a skid-stop. Because who else has JUST WALKED BY, but GQMF WALTER KOENIG. I did a LITERAL double take. And I just kinda blinked. Turned around. He was going to the elevator with the folks who were escorting/hosting him, and BarBara Luna was also with him.  And I realized that I was walking at the front of my group in a full TOS costume, so there was NO WAY he could have missed us, and I could only hope he didn't think we were the crazy fans. Still, for a brief moment of insanity, I wanted to run up and just say "hi," but eventually logic took over and I figured, "Ya know, they're probably exhausted from traveling.  He's going to be here all weekend. I'm going to the Q&A. I'll get a chance to say hello later." Besides, to demonstrate that "insane fan" thing… yeah, not so much.

So we go into town. We meet the guy with the Shuttlecraft Prius. I chat with him for a while, totally investigate all the crazy and AMAZING additions he made to the car, and go exploring some more. [livejournal.com profile] dazi_li rode the mechanical bull at the fairgrounds. We talked to people. As a group, the USS Macchiato got interviewed for YouTube. I'm kinda wondering if it'll ever turn up online, but we'll see.

Finally, we get back to the hotel and crash for the night.

So begins Saturday.

The Riverside Hotel group gets into costume and heads out to go to the parade. Well, almost heads out to the parade.

As we're walking out, who's sitting there by his lonely self but Walter Koenig. And he looked very unhappy. I kinda do a double-take again. Give this little awkward half-wave. He gives us a small smile, and I say, "I'm sorry, we shouldn't pester you." And we head out the door.

At this point, the five of us kinda start talking, and say, "You know, the parade is about to start, he's still at the hotel, and he doesn't look like he's okay. Maybe we should ask if we could do anything to help." So rather than overwhelming him with the whole gaggle of us, I head back in by myself. By then, BarBara Luna has joined him. She's noshing on a muffin, introduces herself with a smile, and asks my name. So, brief introductions, friendly greetings and all, but they both look like they're rather stuck and a little bit unhappy about something. So I apologize for intruding, but say to Walter that we noticed he looked like something was wrong, and we were wondering if there was anything we could do to help.

He gives me a tired-but-friendly smile and says that his ride is 20 minutes late. No WONDER he looked frustrated. I offered him a ride to the parade. For a moment, I thought he was going to take it, but he shook his head and said, "If I were to do that, and my ride shows up, I'd just confuse them." And I joked, "At least the parade won't start without you." He did give me a nice, warm handshake, and I waved and ran off.

Later, as the parade was going, the Walter and Luna float is going by, and BarBara Luna calls out to me BY NAME from the float. And TRIES TO WAVE ME ONTO THE FLOAT. No, I'm not kidding. For a second, I almost jumped on it, but Carol, who is the president of the Riverside Community Council, waves it off. I figured as much, but it was a thrill that not only did one of the celebrities of the parade call out to me by name, in front of EVERYONE, but also that for even a moment, however brief, I was invited to join them.

No more than five minutes later, the Shuttlecraft Prius I saw the night before is driving by, with sound-effects and lights flashing and looking like fifteen kinds of awesome, and I wave to the driver, who recognizes me, gives me this BIG grin, waves me closer, yelling, "CLIMB IN!"

I didn't need to be asked twice. So I rode in the parade in the Shuttlecraft Prius (and seriously, it's more awesome on the inside).

Later, we find our way back to the area where the costuming stuff is about to start. It's HOT AS HELL, but people are trying to stay in the shade. I sign up for the costume contest AND the Guinness Book of World Records. Walter and Luna are judging, and I make it into the final five for the Federation costumes.  I was kinda surprised that they were having every entrant say a few words about Star Trek to the audience.  I mean... I've been in a lot of costume contests (not Star Trek), but I've never been handed a microphone.   A lot of people came up to me afterward and said I should have won (which was kinda awkward but a huge compliment), but you know, it was just FUN.

Then, it's time to set a world record. Oh yes. London had 99 people. We had 153! We had to stand on a hot tennis court in full sunlight for 10 minutes for it to count, but we did it.

After that, my group decided to head back to the hotel. The Q&A was coming up, a lot of us needed to get out of the heat, and so on. We got there in plenty of time for the Q&A, but ONE person in the group, who shall remain nameless, forgot her ID back at the Iowa City hotel and couldn't pick up her ticket for the Q&A. So they took off to retrieve that, and I went in.

When Walter came out, he just started right in on letting people ask questions, and he had fun answers, thoughtful answers, long answers, and delightful stories. He was so cordial, and probably talked at least a half hour longer than they'd expected. Someone asked how he got into acting, and he said it was because he'd planned to go to medical school and and although he'd been pre-med at the start of his undergrad, he said he sucked at chemistry. I did ask a question – I wanted to know, if he was going to have developed Chekov further as a character himself, what would he have done. I wanted to know a bit more about how he envisioned Chekov's motivations, thoughts, and personal history. I explained that I do some writing, and I really like to know what makes a character tick… and I figured he was the best person to ask about what makes Chekov tick. And the funny thing is… he never answered the question. BUT, he started talking about writing. He asked me how old I am, what I write, if I'd thought about getting published. He told me I should try to get published, and not to quit on it. And he said, "Life's too short." I swear, I got teary-eyed.

After the Q&A, I went up to him with a big grin and said, "You know, you never answered my question." He got this thoughtful look on his face and said, "I didn't, did I? I just kinda got carried away." I said that it was fine, and that I'm really thinking about what he'd said. Again, he asked a bit about what I write, and what I do for a career. He actually asked my age again (I don't know if he believed me – I look young). I told him I was a biologist, and that I HAD planned to go to med school, too… but I was actually quite good at chemistry. That actually got a laugh out of him.

He kept talking to other people for a while – really spending time talking to folks. I mean, REALLY authentic. Nothing fake or forced. He seemed like he was really having fun being there.

Later, after Luna's Q&A session, they both came in for photos and autographs. I hadn't planned on doing a photo, but the rest of the crew gathered some cash together, and we got a picture for [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek , as promised (I'll load it later)… with Walter and Luna both holding a sign that says "I ♥ ontd_startrek!" I'm sitting in the Captain's chair. Sadly, other members of the Macchiato crew had disappeared for a nap! SAD! But we got the picture! I also got an autographed picture, which I asked him to make out to my family. I'm going to give it to my mom.

After a brief rest, we all headed down to Murphy's pub and diner, which has both REALLY good food, very friendly waitstaff, decent beer, and the fabled pool table under which James T. Kirk will be conceived in the year 2227. Seriously, there's a plaque under the pool table commemorating it, embedded into the floor.

We went down to the rodeo, decided it was really hot, really obnoxious, and really… yeah, let's not go there… so we went back to Murphy's for some beer and a game of pool. As [livejournal.com profile] kaymyth 's Pon Farr buddy and I were getting ready to play a game of pool, Luna walked in (apparently, Walter was right outside – come on, people… who's stalking whom now?!?) with their local escorts. Luna wanted to get a picture of the plaque under the table, and I volunteered, so I got down on my hands and knees, ass up in the air, and took photos for her and one of the other guys (who is apparently both a BBQ chef and a publisher). After that, I played a couple of games of pool with crew members, and then Luna's local escort returned, and claimed next game. I had won, so he and I played, talked Star Trek, talked Trek Fest, geekery, actors, writing, military, and life in general. It was a good game, and a good chat.

Then, the crew went to the fireworks. DUDE, they set the fireworks to Star Trek music and spoken sound bites. It was really cheesy, but a lot of fun. Really decent fireworks display for such a small town! I was impressed. Ran back into the guy I'd played pool with. Our group chatted with him and a couple of other folks in costume for a little bit longer. Hugs all around. Went back to the hotel.

We were overheated and exhausted.  I was slightly tipsy (one of the people who didn't drink was kind enough to offer to drive before I had my first beer, so yes, ALWAYS have a designated driver!), but it had been a damned good day. Oh yes, damned good day.

And I wasn't ready to sleep. I wanted to write.

So I grabbed my laptop, and found my way back to the corner of the lobby area where there was this little seat tucked into a corner. I sat down, and I wrote a while. Finally, I went to bed.

Technically, that was the end of Trek Fest... but it didn't really stop there.  In fact, here's where we get to the best part.

I slept in a tiny bit this morning, but really didn't feel like lounging around. Decided that the writing bug had bitten me. I didn't want the buffet at the hotel. I'd checked it out, and the food looked really heavy and greasy – not my style. I wanted coffee and fruit and something with protein. I ended up grabbing my own fruit from the hotel room, plus a protein bar, and bought a coffee at the little café. It was just right. I found a table off to the side with a power outlet directly behind it, and I sat down with my coffee, my apple, and my laptop. I wrote for a while, did some thinking – introspection on the weekend. Thinking how glad I was that I'd come. Thinking a bit about my fanfics, and how I need to sit down and write the original stories that I've been sitting on for ages.

I'm going to make a promise to myself, and you'll see why in a minute, but here's the promise:

I'll finish the fanfics I've currently started. Then, I'm quitting fanfic for a while to write the story I've been planning for ages. I have a really great idea for an original novel, and I've started the thing but haven't followed through, and it's about time I stop making excuses and WRITE THE DAMNED THING.

So, as I'm writing, I glance up, and Walter's walking by. Even though I'm no longer in costume, he seems to recognize me and makes eye contact. I smile and wave, and he smiles back and waves, and continues on. I inwardly squee a bit – that was just like this amazing icing on the cake, ya know?  Really awesome.  So I take a deep breath, think fondly of the memory, and turn back to my writing.

Okay, you know that fantasy we all have? That one of our favorite actors just randomly comes up to us, as we're sitting there drinking coffee and maybe even writing fanfiction, and says, "Mind if I join you?" And how we know it'll never happen, because that's just crazy-talk, and an RPF Mary Sue story of the worst kind?

So I glance up again, and there's Walter with a warm smile and a charmingly hesitant inquiry, "Mind if I join you?"

I managed not to flip out. In fact, I think I held my cool pretty well. I said, "Please do! I'd be delighted."

So he sits down, and I ask how he's enjoyed Trek Fest. He tells me that he's had a great time, really had fun. I said that we'd been saying last night that we'd hoped he enjoyed himself while he was there.

He's carrying something, which is a gift that a fan who couldn't be there had left for him at the hotel front desk – it's this silver cup in a tin with a lovely letter. I figured I wouldn't ask further, but he seemed really touched by the gift.

And then we start talking. He asked what I was writing. I admit that I do write Star Trek fanfiction, although I've written some of my own original work, too. He asks, "Not that… Kirk/Spock stuff, is it?" (He's laughing a little bit.)
I say, "Noooo…"
"What about Sulu/Chekov?"
I laugh and say, "No, but I've seen it."
I tell him I write mostly action/adventure stuff, character studies, and explorations of the friendships between characters. I talked a bit about the Kirk and McCoy friendship in the new movie, and how there's no way McCoy would have risked his career smuggling Jim on board the Enterprise if they hadn't already had a very close friendship. He said I had a good point there.

We talked about canon in Star Trek. He can't understand the obsessive canon-thumpers.  I laughed and said I know a fair bit about the canon, but mostly because I just remember stuff. But I figure that it's good to know the canon so then we can screw with it.

I explained why I wanted to know more about Chekov – that I have a fic I'm working on, and I want to know a bit more about him before I make assumptions. So… here's the WORD FROM WALTER: If you want to know more about Chekov, watch the "New Voyages" episodes. He said you'll learn more about Chekov as a character that way, and he's totally behind it.

I told him that I'd just had Star Trek as a household thing since I was a kid – raised by a pair of Trekkies, but not obsessive ones – but that Star Trek has personal meaning for me. I explained that it got me through some of my most difficult military assignments. At this point, it's Walter's turn to look surprised. "You were in the military?" I nodded. "I was an Army officer. I served for seven years." We talked about why I'd gone into the service, some of what I'd seen and done, and so on. He seemed… surprised. Asked again how old I am. LOL.

After a bit, I shifted the topics. I wanted to hear what HE wanted to talk about. So I asked, "So what are you doing next?"

He's writing a movie script. And he spent a solid ten minutes, maybe longer, telling me all about his script, what he's writing, how the plot goes together, how he's going to film various scenes and sequences. You should have seen this light go on in his eyes as he talked about it. Big grin, leaning over the table, gesturing as he's describing things. I don't know if I'm supposed to keep quiet about his plans, so just in case, I'm not going to discuss the plot. But either way, I'd be intrigued to see it. I mean, he just seems SO excited about it. Authentically excited.

We talked about other stuff, too… just chit-chat. I think we sat and talked for at least forty-five minutes. Kinda lost track of time, really. Just the two of us, sitting at a table, off to the side of the little café in the Riverside Hotel and Casino. He was an absolute sweetheart.

Later, as I was just about to leave, sitting by the door with my bags and waiting for my friends, I was on the phone with my mother, telling her about the weekend.  I'd JUST started telling her that Walter Koenig had been there, but I hadn't gotten to tell her anything else, when Walter walks by on his way to the gift shop.  I decide to take a risk.  I admit, I felt a bit guilty asking for anything else from him, but... anyway.  Tell my mom to hang on.  Ran up to Walter, and asked him if he'd be willing to say hi to my mom.  He grinned and said sure.

So I hand him the phone, and he says, "Hi mom!"  Now, I figured he'd make some cute little catch-phrase joke or something, but instead, he said that he'd had a delightful time talking with me, that I was bright and energetic and so on (and can you imagine how hard I started blushing just then???), and after about 15 or 20 seconds, handed the phone back to me.  I thanked him profusely, for everything, and walked back to my stuff.

My mom said, "Who was that?"  I laughed and said, "Mom, you just said hi to Chekov."

Anyway, we're back in Kansas City, and I'm starving, so... goodnight!

Here's the link to my photobucket pic of the plaque from Murphy's. (with bonus lensflare, natch. If you want to link to it in the post, you can!

It was good to meet you, too! I'm just sorry it was in the middle of the absolutely hectic part of the day. Someday, you'll be able to hang out for longer than that, right?

*hugs*

You know, I didn't actually get to talk to Koenig last year, but he struck me as being exactly as awesome as you're describing. Every time I saw him, he was talking to fans, casual and interested and honestly looking like he was having a great time.

Out of all the cast in all the shows, I think he's the one I'd pick to share breakfast/beer with first. I can't imagine anyone else being as easy to talk to or having such a smart, friendly sense of humor. I'm so happy that you got to hang out with him like that!!!

(Also, I was sort of imagining myself in your shoes and getting ready to breathe a mental sigh of relief that I've never written any smutty Chekov/Sulu, and thus would not have to fess up to it, but then I remembered that I wrote something that's probably worse. WALTER KOENIG I LOVE YOU IN A COMPLETELY PLATONIC FANNISH WAY AND I WOULD NEVER DO BAD THINGS TO YOUR CHARACTER IT WAS YELCHIN!CHEKOV IN THAT STORY I SWEAR. ahem.)

Anyway, I'm glad that the away mission was a success!!!!! YAY MACCHIATO FUN.

Oh, and \o/ Barbara Luna, she sounds awesome tooooooo!

(Finally: I totally did NOT know the trivia bit about the thing under the pool table o.O that's bait for naughty fic right there, whyyyyyy was I not aware of this before now.)

*looks forward to pictures*

HAHAHA!!! I won't tell Walter any of this. Not that I expect to have another chance, but I can only hope that I meet him again. It was an absolute joy to chat with him. He really IS that nice. Just... I can't quite put into words how profoundly happy I this made me. I just is.

But yes! The mission was a complete success. Aside from the weather being hotter than the blazes of a summer day on the Vulcan equator. Dude, seriously - viciously hot. Still, we had a lot of fun, met a lot of really cool people. We have to do this again. Can you come next year? :D

Yeah, he's quite aware of the slash fanfic out there. I was amused, but I said that no, I mostly write adventure stories and character explorations. But seriously, I need to write my original stuff.

I was a bit hesitant to ask him to talk to my mom, but I was telling her about it, and he was THERE. I mean... my mom's been a fan of his since the 1960s. I had to.

I did a double-take when I saw him in the crowded hallway at Worldcon; I can't imagine how you managed to handle it.

That said, my first impression was "He's so short!" But I don't think that was yours. *g*

I did a double-take mostly because he was so unassuming. Wearing very understated clothes and a baseball cap, and I had to do the double take because he WAS so understated.

And actually, I DID note how short he is. Because I'm so used to people towering over me, but he didn't. It was really cool.

Good to see you, if for a brief time.

I was mostly taken by the way his grief seems to be etched on his face. He's had a hell of a year, and it's the sort of thing that just ages you--WHAM--and you're never the same again. Like when Anne of Green Gables' baby dies, and LM Montgomery writes that her smile and the twinkle in her eye were never just quite the same again. Like that.

From: [identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com
Yeah, I could see that, and in comparison with pictures I've seen of him in the past, it was obvious. But seriously, when he started talking about his new script, it melted away, if only for a few minutes. He's tired, and he's still dealing with grief, but I think he's coping, and he's still got more left in him than we might think. He was authentically excited and enthusiastic when he was talking about that script. :)

...you kind of have to realize I hate you a little bit of a lot, right? I mean, that was kind of a given.

I mean, I love you. You know I love you. But I kind of... really really hate you. Except I kind of can't, because I? Would have flipped my shit and acted like an insane fangirl. Which is fine because I'm nine-fucking-teen and deserve to act like it, but that? Would not have gone over well.

But seriously... yay, you. Just... yay, you.

Now I swear to God one day this will happen with Chris Colfer and there will be a fifty-page LJ post talking about it.

LOL... don't hate me because I'm a lucky bastard. Hate me because I did it without flipping my shit. :D

But yeah, it was pretty amazing.

Yeah, that would be my reaction, too... except I'm just feeling amazingly zen about all this right now. LOL. :D

See, I feel bad about this. When we were all looking, I didn't see because:
A)NO CLUE WHAT TO LOOK FOR. Everyone was flipping, and I was confuzzled

B) Other people in the way. So, yeah :'(

But I saw him elsewhere where you didn't so it kinda makes up for it in some odd way. Idk. Chekov high still going.

What I realized belatedly is that I didn't actually tell him about my original novel that I'm working on. SAD!

But then... I came home and looked for the file, and I can't find it. SADDER!

But I'm going to start working on it as soon as the Big Bang is over. Yes, I am. And I'm going to have a character named Walter.

Omigod. I'd have been all over his Bester from Babylon 5 and told him just what a sex symbol he was in that too! :D

LOL - I keep meaning to WATCH Babylon 5. It's on my short list of series to watch - Farscape, Battlestar Gallactica, Heroes, Stargate Universe - but I don't watch a lot of TV. I like watching a series WITH someone.
