Do the folks at the EPA, OSHA, and the Department of Transportation think they're cute by having the HAZMAT training and emergency response refresher course filled with obnoxious little graphics and shit, while being slowly read aloud by an annoying male voice?

Dude, just send me a basic outline, let me read it, and let me take the test to prove I haven't forgotten this shit.  SERIOUSLY.  I've turned off the volume for the narration, but I still have to wait for each page of the training presentation to play through.

WHYYYYY???

I'm already well-trained in emergency response.  Chemical spills, chemical exposures, hazmat shit... yeah, I know this stuff.  I deal with it daily.  And now I've got to prove that I remember a bunch of stupid acronyms for federal regulations so that the next time some idiot researcher with more technical know-how than common sense decides to douse himself or herself with a toxic chemical, or spill an organic solvent in a public walkway, or cross-contaminate an entire lab with unknown substances, I can try to keep the damage to a minimum.

After this section, I'm going HOME.

*petpet* They do the same in the medical fields. I end up having to listen to them whenever my mother has to do her refreshers. I believe those who create these little blurbs think the General populace are idiots.

Nah, but it's annoying when your not an idiot and you have to put up with it anyway.

Shoot, when I worked at a library that was five stories I had people ask me questions like this:

"Do you have an upper floor?"
Me: "We have 4 of them."
"Do you have stairs?" Note: You see the stairs as you walk in the front door. They're not hidden.

Me: "If you turn to your right, it's right in front of you."

I even had someone ask if they could borrow books. Once while I was answering the phone and then helping that person with a form they asked "Are you open?"

I think the last one is not as idiotic as it sounds. "We shoo everyone out and close the doors at 5, but we're here till six finishing up, and as long as there's someone at this desk we answer the phone."

Urr.... Not to disagree on substance, but can we please not call them acronyms if we don't pronounce them like words ("NATO", "smof")? I can say "TSTL" as a word -- [ts̩ƛ] -- but I've been doing this all my life, and most English-speakers can't. AFAI'mC, "TSTL" ("tee ess tee ell") is an initialism, not an acronym.

Okay - you got me on that one. Although I *do* like some of these definitions of ACRONYM: http://www.acronymfinder.com/ACRONYM.html

FWIW - sbbreviations like the one I listed come from my 'Not By Any Means Offical, We'd Really Like To Use Them In Our Records, But We'd Be Canned If We Did] list of medical term.

I have this feeling that I know EXACTLY what you are talking about from the "NOAA IT Security Awareness" Course that NOAA employees have to take every year... so much blinking text and cartoon computers with winking eyeballs that you get the impression that whoever wrote it is the type who actually does click on the bank fraud emails or send money to that distant relative in Saudi Arabia or whatever.

TEA. *gives tea* Tea is a cure-all. (Or so I hear.)

:/ Can't you go home a bit early? Or are you still wrestling with silly acronyms? *hugs*

It is! Not entirely sure why, but still. *ponders* Now there's just the money issue... :D Also, I've been meaning to ask: where'd you get your screenname from? ♥

I can go home without a hitch in 45 minutes. I can wait it out. No worries.

How much does it cost to get your LJ name changed?

My LJ name is from YEARS ago... almost 12 years. It was my "Jedi" name from the Star Wars fandom, but more specifically, it's the first two letters of my first name, and the first three letters of my middle name. It's really that simple. :)

Date: 2010-01-08 09:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vixys.livejournal.com
Good. Go home then, and go and be warm and well. Please?

It apparently costs $15, which is about £9.50 in Sterling. :-/ Idk.

Hmm. A "Jedi" name. Mine would be... SaFra. :D That just sounds like someone's misspelt the abbreviation for San Francisco. *facepalm* (What's your middle name? *is nosy*) ♥

Date: 2010-01-08 10:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com
I will, I promise. And "warm" is the problem. It has warmed up to -14 C (windchill of -21 C). It was a couple of degrees colder this morning when I walked in.

Hmmm...

Middle name is Janice. DON'T TELL ANYONE.

*hugs* Wow, that's cold. It was -18 here last night, but still. That was at night. *sends you blankets and thermals*

Hmmm...
Is that bad or good? :D

Hey, nothing wrong with Janice. :D Mine's Frances. I share a middle with a male friend. *facepalm* ANYWAY. ♥

Yeah, it's been pretty blustery here. Cold AND windy.

Not good or bad. Just considering.

And I would PREFER to have a gender-ambiguous OR masculine name, hun. *sigh*

I think I won't go to the gym tonight.

From: [identity profile] vixys.livejournal.com
Oh, bb. *hugs* Shut your brain down, and take a rest as soon as you can. And no gym - that's a new rule. ♥

Date: 2010-01-08 10:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com
No gym? But... but... I can't let myself get chubby! *flails*

*whimpers*

My god, I feel so pathetic right now.

Date: 2010-01-08 10:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vixys.livejournal.com
Embrace my position on chubbiness/whatnot: food is good, and I am lazy.

Okay, well maybe not exactly. But still - going to the gym when you're most definitely not 100% can't be the best of ideas, and it'd be better if you just felt better. And you're not exactly going to be eating shedloads if you're not feeling well - so no more "chubbiness" there.

*hugs* Patheticness comes hand in hand with illness. S'okay. It'll pass. ♥♥

Hey, that's what I am (among other things). Some people complain that the orders aren't parallel, that "straight" should precede "pagan-friendly"; but this way works better visually. Someone asked "What about Muslims? Hindus? Sikhs? Animists? Atheists?" I'm friendly to everyone, but pagans tend to be especially targeted. Anyway, that's my icon and I'm sticking to it .... Ugh! shouldn't've used Superglue, dammit...
