Okay, I really don't like cajoling my friends to join things, and I hate Facebook even more, but I'd REALLY like everyone's help on this one.

For those of you who don't know what Trekfest is, it's not a major Star Trek con.  It's the local town festival of Riverside, Iowa... the official birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk.  Since Roddenberry accepted the town's mission to gain the title, the town has dubbed its annual festival "Trekfest."  It's been attended by various Star Trek actors, and has brought revenue to the tiny Iowa town.

However, this year, Trekfest might be canceled for the first time in over a quarter of a century.  Why?  Money.  Not only is the economy suffering, but the FLOODING last year caused several local fundraisers to fizzle out.  As a result, the town doesn't even have the money to get Trekfest off the ground.  What's worse is that this event brings IN revenue for the town, which would sink them even deeper into a hole.

So, what can you do, you ask?

First, you don't need to come to Trekfest.  I know that not everyone can.  (If you can, you should.  It's FANTASTIC.  And the fine folks or Riverside are wonderful.)  However, a few of us have started a campaign.  We're trying to bring in the big dogs.

You see, when he went to Riverside to film "Invasion Iowa," William Shatner promised to return to Riverside for Trekfest.  Alas, he has yet to return.  Bringing Shatner in might bring money with him.  But hell, the man should just keep his damned promise.

Also, we're trying to rustle up general support for the event.  So first, we need to get word to the Riverside Community Council that the event should be continued.  To do this, join THIS FACEBOOK GROUP.  Then, post your own note to the Riverside Community Council, telling them to keep Trekfest alive.

The second part of the plan is a simple "fanpage" we're using to get Shatner's attention.  The folks who run Trekfest figure we can get some of the other actual actors to "like" the page... but before we ask them, we want to boost the numbers.  Lots of numbers.  We want this to be a fandom-wide campaign.  And all you need to do is press a "like" button.

So please, go to THIS PAGE, and click "like" to tell William Shatner to keep his promise and come to Trekfest this year.  If you're willing, please leave a comment, too.  Your little message to The Shat, telling why you believe he needs to come to Riverside.  I promise, no spam.  No requests for money.  We just need a a show of support.

PLEASE CROSS POST!  Post to your geeky friends, your fellow Trekkies, your Trek communities.  Hell, even if they're not Trekkies, they understand geeky things.  Ask your anime friends, your Harry Potter friends, your World of Warcraft buddies.  The more, the merrier.  Maybe, we can save Trekfest.

Title: "Anatomy Lessons"
Rating: R
Word Count: 894
Summary: It's a Friday night after a long week. Thus, the boys have been drinking, and Jim's silliness leads to an impromptu human osteology lesson. It's all about the bones.

Notes: Sadly, I wasn't drunk. But I was being silly, and somehow a conversation between myself and my Trophy Wife (who works in the medical field and knows the human skeleton in perfect detail) devolved into... silliness. Then I said I wanted cookies. And she said she'd bake cookies for me if I turned our silliness into a Jim/Bones comment fic. Had to be less than 1000 words. This is the result. :D

Also... Mmmmm cookies.

Hi everyone! Just a last minute reminder for everyone about the party tomorrow!

The fun starts with a general "social hour" around 3:00 PM as people start to trickle in. The real party begins at 5:00. It's a pot-luck, so bring something to share! The party continues until we're all too tired to function. I've got plenty of sleeping accommodations if anyone wants to stay over.

Remember to RSVP at the main post if you haven't already!

See you there!
mijan: (Captain Speaking (CP in Unstoppable))
This is just a reminder to all the local-ish Star Trek lovelies on my list here:

Next Saturday, the 19th of March, is the date of our next USS Macchiato party!  The crew will be converging on the Captain's Quarters (my house) for an afternoon and evening of fun!  The kicker on this whole event?  Our First Officer is back in town!  Anticipate the following:

- Pot luck dinner.  I'll be making my (in)famous chili.  Bring something to share!
- DS9 episodes, plus whatever else we decide to watch.
- Green people.  I bought extra high-grade body color, and will happily turn people into Orions.
- Bourbon.  Really good bourbon.

Also, I've completely finished turning my basement into a proper party room.  Carpet, comfy futons, central heating that actually covers the basement, and the television is downstairs.  We have enough space for the entire crew to sack out on cushy futons while watching episodes and movies now!  The upstairs living room will be non-TV socializing space.  Plus, with a total of four futons and an air mattress in the house, anyone who wants to stay over will have plenty of sleeping space.

NOTE: Also, as most of you know, even though [livejournal.com profile] mizuno_caitlin  is here in the USA right now, she's made her home in Japan.  We're grateful that she's safe, but this is a reminder of how small the world is, and how we really do need to take care of each other.   I'm going to be putting a coffee can for donations near the door.  I know that not everyone in the crew has a lot of money, and that our economy here at home is pretty tight, but if you wish to put in anything (even pocket change), we'll send the full amount to the Red Cross to help with the recovery effort.

This morning, the crew of the space shuttle Discovery got a wake-up call from the Captain of the USS Enterprise

Story HERE on CNN.

Granted, I still can't get REAL news stories from CNN.com, but in the meantime, at least I got something relevant to my interests today.

Summary: Jim feels the aftershocks of a command decision.

Warnings and a note: As the title suggests, this fic involves an earthquake. I started writing this before the earthquakes in New Zealand. I put it aside for a few weeks, but when I completed it, it felt a bit more like a tribute to the people who went in and helped the victims of that tragedy. I understand that it still might feel a bit raw for some folks, hence the warning. There are no graphic descriptions, but read at your own discretion.

Star Trek Meme
1. What is your favorite Star Trek movie? (not including STXI)?  It seriously depends on my mood.  Actually... "First Contact."  Yeah, TNG.  I got chills, and a little bit choked up, when I saw the first warp nacelles deploy.

2. What is your favorite scene in STXI? From the moment Bones says, "Look, Jim... I've gotta go," when he's supposed to leave for the Enterprise, to the moment he and Jim run onto the bridge.

3. When were you first introduced to the Star Trek franchise? i was raised by two Trekkies, so I don't remember a time when I didn't know about Star Trek.  I think I started watching TOS episodes when I was five.  Maybe younger.  And I started actively following TNG when I was seven.

4. Is there anything Star Trek around the room in which you're currently sitting? Oh fuck yeah.  Let's see... my Cadet McCoy action figure.  My model phaser.  A bunch of Star Trek jokes, comics, and memes that I printed out and posted on the wall.  And did I mention... this is my cubicle at work.

5. Vulcan ears are: A) cute, B) sexy, C) neither, D) both.  C) Neither.  They're very distinguished.

6. If you could be any other species than human in the Star Trek universe, you would be:  A member of the Q Continuum, please.  After that... Betazoid.

7. Which pet would you rather have: a sehlat or a tribble? Sehlat.  But really, could I have a Tarkazian Razor Beast?

8. Who might you cast in the role of reboot Nurse Chapel? Khan? Other reboot character?  Dude, don't ask me stuff like that.

9. Kirk and Spock are: In TOS - the most epic romance ever. In XI? They've got a working relationship.

10. If you could give any Star Trek character a chance to be captain of the Enterprise, who would it be?  Scotty.  He's the only man who loves that ship as much as Kirk.

BONUS. Think fast! Give one Star Trek quote from memory: "In this galaxy, there's a mathematical probability of three-million Earth-type planets.  An in all of the universe, three million-million galaxies like our own.  And in all that, and perhaps more, only one of each of us.  Don't destroy the one named Kirk." - McCoy, TOS, "Balance of Terror"
"I bet you were a jumper."  - Guinan to Ensign Ro, TNG, "Rascals"
"Nice planet."  Worf, TNG, "Justice"
"I regret nothing."  Picard to Q, in bed, TNG, "Tapestry."
"The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth..." Picard to Wesley, TNG, "The First Duty"
"Do they have sandwiches there?" - Scotty, ST:XI

So I was doing my usual morning routine -  drinking my coffee while I check my work e-mail, respond to important messages, check my schedule, and then do a quick check of headlines on CNN.  I typically check the main page, the US news, World news, Technology, and then the Health news.  90% of the "Health" news is mindless dribble, but every so often there's a fascinating new study gets posted.  Even though CNN's analysis of the study is usually pathetic, I'll at least hear that the study HAPPENED, and then I can go find the actual paper in a medical journal or publication.  And sometimes, one story links to another story on another news site about medical research.

Today, I found this:

I clicked on the article, and it said that the work was done by researchers here at the University of Kansas Medical Center.  Yeah, that's where I work.  And I know some of the folks over in neurology... including one of my fellow Star Trek buddies.  And then I read this quote from the article:
"The researchers said they don’t know why Alzheimer’s appears to be more aggressive when inherited from one’s mother instead of one’s father. Perhaps it’s related to mitochondrial DNA, which is inherited only from one’s mother and which may be responsible for faulty glucose metabolism in brain tissue affected by Alzheimer’s, they wrote."

Russ, my Trekkie friend, works specifically on cellular metabolism as it relates to Alzheimer's and other degenerative neurological diseases.  That caught my attention.  So, I printed out a copy of the article and stopped by his office on my way back from doing a chemical inventory in another lab.  And lo and behold, it was his research!

Russ is a sorta adjunct member of the USS Macchiato.  Busy man with a family, and thus he hasn't been to one of our get-togethers, but he's a true-blue, to-the-core Trekkie.  I named one of the characters from "Crossfire," the neurologist from Starfleet Medical "Admiral Swerdlow," after him, and now I call him the Admiral.  He seems to get a kick out of it.  I swear, the man is going to invent tri-ox compound, just so he can say that he did.

He printed out a copy of the research paper so I can read it in full.  It's quite fascinating.

So... here's to a fellow Trekkie, doing great things!  I think Dr. McCoy would be proud.

I've never posted a fanvid before.  I don't really know how to make fanvids.  But damn, do I get ideas.  I had this one concept in my mind for months.  I had the music and several sequences of video clips from the movie floating in my head.  I just had no idea how to turn it into a fanvid.

Then [livejournal.com profile] kimuracarter  showed me a Doctor Who fanvid she'd made, and told me it was her first and only fanvid.  It was REALLY good.   So... I decided to mention my idea for the Star Trek fanvid.  And she liked it.

For the past week or so, she's been working on editing while we've bounced ideas back and forth.  I described vid sequences that I'd already had in mind.  She created other sequences.  She came up with this one brilliant sequence that defined the entire storyline of the vid, and we edited and cobbled concepts together around it.  She did all the actual vid editing herself, but this was a creative collaboration, and I'm beyond thrilled to have been a part of it.

And when I saw the final product, it brought tears to my eyes.  Give it a watch.

Jim blinked. This made no sense. "Did I hit my head harder than I thought?" Jim mused aloud. "Don't get me wrong - I like this idea, but the one time anything ever happened between us, we were both drunk, and the next morning, you dumped me off your bed, onto the floor, and told me, and I quote, that I was 'too immature' and you didn't like 'entertaining juvenile delinquents' in your bed."

So here's the aftermath... the morning after Bones drunkenly entertained that juvenile delinquent in his bed.

For those of you who might have missed the post on the group page, head over HERE and chime in on the party planning poll.  We need to pick a date for the party, and need to get an idea of what activities people would like to do.

(For those who are new-ish to my LJ, a quick explanation:  The USS Macchiato is a Star Trek fangroup based in the Kansas City area, but with members ranging from Colorado to eastern Missouri, Chicago to Oklahoma.  Technically, we even have members in upstate new York and Japan.  We get together approximately once a month for rampant geekiness and a damned good party.  Membership is open to all humanoids over the age of 18 Earth years.)

Right now, the vague plans for the holiday party include a possible pre-main-party ice skating party at Crown Center.  It will be a pot-luck, and we'll probably watch a movie.  The idea has also been thrown in that we should do an MST3K.  A few people have seconded the notion of doing group fanfic readings aloud (badfic, bad porn, really good fic, crackfic... should be a fun time).  We're also definitely doing another gift exchange game this year (I'll give the full details for that in a separate post) because it went so well last year.

Currently, the date with the most votes is January 8th, although that could still change.

So, if you're interested in joining the USS Macchiato for our annual holiday party, head over there and get involved!
