There is not just one Worldcon. In Seattle this year, there were 5500 registered attendees plus another 2000 or so bought single-day memberships, meaning there were ~7500 different Worldcons this year.

Worldcon is many things to many people, but the one thing it always is, is an intentional community. It’s an event that happens because people give their time, their energy, their skills, and their care to make it happen.

In this way, Worldcon is, and always has been, what we make of it. It is simultaneously the home of one of our genre’s most important awards, a premiere costuming event, a professional development incubator, a social structure, an important economic opportunity for some, a schmoozefest, and a celebration of all that the science fiction/fantasy genres have to offer. It’s also a microcosm of all the stresses and problems of our society, and really, how could it not be?

Got caught up in memories and felt the urge to write poetry. So here's a new poem. I also shared this on my tumbler, vmures.tumblr.com (so if you see it there, that's also me)

CW: grief

In the Golden Afternoon

Eleven years gone and still
the golden light of late summer
brings me back to you.

No calendar is needed to mark the time.
My body, it remembers
you and me and cold drinks on the porch
memories shared
smoke winding drifting away on the wind
music and silence
the days growing ever shorter
as I watched you fade.

August faded into September
and you faded from your body
with us sleeping nearby.

We had a rocky start
and you left your fair share of scars
But you taught me
the power of a true apology
that life may not be fair
but kindness is almost always worth it.

So I watch the light shift
summer to autumn and breathe.

Every year, I breathe
through the memories of that long goodbye
grateful for those last moments
and so proud of the man you had become
of the dad you grew to be.
