I just realized one of the great secrets of the universe.  A great and epic truth, obvious to see, but unnoticed to all who came before.

And now, I shall impart this great secret unto thee.

The truth about Gyro meat.

No no, it's not what you're thinking.  It's perfectly good.  Very tasty.  But think about it.  It's appealing to most people in common dishes.  It's good roasted, grilled, or cut into small pieces in a casserole.  It's a finely chopped, blended, spiced meat of undiscernable anatomical location.

It's Middle Eastern Spam.

Yeah, unfortunately she has this revelation while I'm gorging myself on the yummy goodness at the MiddleEastern Cafe. *shakes head*

Hmmm. May I suggest that you not switch to the falafel plate or she'll have another epiphany?

That reminds me of a woman I worked with years ago telling about preparing for a large dinner party where she had searched for weeks for a suitable recipe for the lovely ham that her boss had given her for an award, she spent hours preparing the dish that involved roasting the whole ham, chopping it up and adding many exotic spices and reforming the mixture into an appropriate sculptured shape, then glazing and baking the resulting masterpiece. When she served it, the boss’s wife leaned over and whispered to her that she'd love to have the recipe as she was always searching for good Spam recipes.

FTW. Awesome. I've been eating Doner kebab (which is like a gyro only european and not Greek...) and it's the same things.

Yesterday, I realized that falafels are pretty much Middle Eastern hushpuppies.

That's so hysterically sad. I don't know whether to laugh or cry over that one.

Well, I'll be hornswaggled!

I think this goes along with G'Kar's observation that every advanced civilization has some form of "Swedish Meatballs.

At my house we call Gyro meat "blam", since it's a combo of beef and lamb.

Well, if it helps, my friend thought it was pretty humorous in retrospect and liked to tell the story to get a laugh. I have no doubt that it wasn't all that funny at the time.
