mijan: (Kirk had a blast)
mijan ([personal profile] mijan) wrote2010-01-20 02:48 pm

Quick update...

I'm back from Arisia (geek convention in Boston), and I had a blast.  As always.  I love cons.  I love the people, the discussions, the randomness, the geekery, the excitement, the energy, the experience... all of it.  Arisia is an amazing convention, and if anyone feels like traveling for anything smaller than Dragon*Con, then Arisia is the regional convention to attend.  SO. MUCH. FUN.  I absolutely love it every time.

What I don't love is feeling like I've been hit by a steam roller.

I went into Arisia already feeling a bit under the weather.  Not sick like a cold, but sick like dizzy and fatigued and faintly icky.  Now, I seem to have a very mild head cold on top of already feeling icky.  Feels like I've been kicked in the gut by a horse.  Vision is oddly blurry.  And gods, I just want to lie down.  But I'm at work, and I still have more work to do.

So now, I'm going to go play with radioactive waste.  WOO-freakin'-HOO.  And then I'm going to try to complete another training module for general HAZMAT qualification renewal.  And then I'm going to go home and collapse.  But I can't really collapse... for two reasons.

#1.  I'm going to ANOTHER convention this weekend, and I need to wash, dry, fold, and re-pack all of my costumes.

#2.  It's my wife's birthday, and I am determined to do SOMETHING for it.

So, in summary:  Arisia was awesome.  I am *ded*.  I will post in detail about Arisia when I am not!*ded*.  Also, happy birthday DeForest Kelley - you are missed.  And Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] fiona_fawkes  - I love you, hun.

I'm sorry you're still feeling ill. *hugs*

I'm glad you had a good time though, and I hope heading off to another convention so soon doesn't trigger more illness!

Feel better!

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, it's life. We'll see how it goes. I'm sure that another convention so soon isn't a smart idea, but... *shrugs*

*hugs*
Thanks, hun.

[identity profile] dazi-li.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Get better soon, dudeson. Wish I was there.

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Wish you were here, too, m'dear. Hell, I wish you could come to the convention this weekend!

I'm sure I'll be fine though. I'm pretty resilient.

[identity profile] dazi-li.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, it'll be awhile before I can make it back to the area, but I'm saving up for when we go to Iowa in the spring, so it'll be worth it. :D

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That will be awesome, then. <3

[identity profile] mintcloud.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You, my dear? Are an idiot of truly staggering proportions.

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh gee, I love you too. :p

And how am I an idiot? I've been getting plenty of sleep and trying to take care of myself. I even got sleep while I was AT the convention! Give me some credit for trying, right?

[identity profile] mintcloud.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
If you were trying, you would be at home in bed.

Medics make the worst patients.

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I had stuff here that I needed to do!

And I'll rest tonight, okay? I'm trying to decide if I should see a doctor ASAP or wait until my real appointment next week. As of now, nothing is acute, so I'm waiting at the moment.

[identity profile] mintcloud.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
*introduces head to desk*

*repeats*

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
*puts a pillow on the desk*

Careful there - you might dent my desk.

:D

[identity profile] dulcinbradbury.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
HI! This is Amanda from Arisia. Just saying hello. :)

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello hello as well! :D

Did you have fun?

[identity profile] dulcinbradbury.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes I did indeed. :)

[identity profile] xdaemon.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the crud hit me late last night. Left work early today, got home and crawled in to bed. Yuck. :-P

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ewwww, that sucks, man. Mutual sympathy. *offers tissues*

[identity profile] pennylenne.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I WILL SMACK YOU DOWN LIKE THE HAND OF GOD IF YOU DO NOT GET TO A DOCTOR DAMNIT!
STOP BEING A KIRK AND GET YOUR SICKASS TO THE MEDBAY, OR MOMMY WILL UNLEASH HER WRATH!

In other news, glad you fun.
I want to see pictures!

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Hey hey! WTF with the smackdown???

There's seriously only so much a doctor can do, and at the moment, it's illogical for me to go. My symptoms aren't acute. If it gets to that point, I will, but there's no reason at the moment for me to burden an ER or waste time in an urgent care clinic.

Besides... if it gets too bad but I continue to be stubborn, my wife will drag me there herself.

There will be pictures, eventually. :)

For now... I'm particularly fond of this pic from the Masquerade competition:

[identity profile] pennylenne.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I WILL SMACK YOU DOWN AND YOU WILL DEAL WITH IT DAMNIT.
You ignited Mommy mode and now I'm going to be all panicked and worried and have a strong urge to make you soup.

You seriously just used the world illogical. Oh my god.
.......Logic be damned! If you die before I become your best friend so I can walk around saying I'm friends with Frodo, I"ll eat you.

I salute your wife then.
Speaking of wives, I'm getting one myself.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Frodo. Tap dancing Christ on a cracker.
That is pretty damn epic m'dear.

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Er... I don't deal well with being on the receiving end of a smackdown. :p But just so you know, I'm already making chicken soup.

And yes, I used the word "illogical." It's a very good word. And seeing as I have no intentions of dying (seriously, that would put such a damper on my fun), you don't have to worry about that.

Oh, and so suddenly now I'm not Bones, I'm Frodo? One picture, and wham! There goes my "omg you look like Karl and De's love child!" status. *snicker* I get quite into my cosplay, and pick characters I know I can perform. I've been told by many people that Frodo is my most accurate character (natural curls, and I'm short), but I've had other folks say the same about other characters, too. I'll leave that up to each observer, and just have fun with it. I'm glad you think it's epic, though. I'm still waiting to find a video of the presentation with Frodo. I'll try to get more pictures posted soon.

You're getting a wife, huh? When did this happen?

Aaaand... are you on IM?

[identity profile] pennylenne.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
OH DEAR GOD YOUR ICON.
BRB LOLLIN FOREVER.

Hope you ate every damn drop of that soup.
Well this is what happens when you become friends with mothers, we smack you down over the internet. XD

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. SPPPPPPPPPOOOOOOOOOOOOCKKKKKK! Oh Nero.
Seriously, you better not.

You're still the love child, fear not (HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. KELLEY! <3). You just make a funny Frodo. Like if I didn't like you so much I would macro the shit out of that picture.
Sounds quite epic, can't wait to see. XD

YES. I AM.
LIKE GOD DAMN THAT WASNT THE MOST NERVE WRACKING THING OF MY LIFE.
Seriously, the LSATS weren't as bad.

thedoomsong0103
YES. I AM AN INVADER ZIM FAN.
DONT JUDGE ME.

[identity profile] girlofavalon.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
I am so sorry you're feeling ill :| But I am also happy to hear that you had a good time at the con! I can't wait to hear it in details when you're feeling better.

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs* Thanks, hun. I'm sure I'll get better soon. <3

[identity profile] tgrcats-tail.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Get to feeling better! If it is cold-ish I very much endorse Chinese take out/delivery Hot-Sour soup.
I am jealous, two conventions in a row... I live in the wrong part of the world. Great photo BTW.
and your shout-out to DeForrest Kelly brought a big smile this morning. THANKS!
PS Happy B'day to your lady.

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to feel better. However, as much as I love hot and sour soup when I have a head cold, this isn't just a head cold. But I appreciate the thought. And also, I don't do H&S soup via take-out. I make it from scratch at home. Much better that way. But I prefer to wait until spring so I can gather the wild cloud-ear mushrooms myself. *grins*

I'll pass on the b-day wishes!

[identity profile] tgrcats-tail.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
ooo yes, home made is better, but usually I crave it when I am sick and have no ooomph to cook. Of course now you have me wanting hot sour noodles. Have not made those in ages.
Did not realize you could actually grow cloud ears semi-locally - learned something new!
Do be sure to take care of yourself, there are scary things out there that you do NOT want catching you!

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't grow the mushrooms. I gather them wild, from the forest. They grow all over most of the United States. Look for them in damp, spring weather. There are no lookalike mushrooms, so they're VERY safe for amateur mushroom hunters. If it looks like a cloud-ear, it IS a cloud ear.

I'm trying to take care of myself, I promise. *sigh*

[identity profile] tgrcats-tail.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry, guess I put on the momma-cat tone ~.~
As for damp spring, um Colorado - not so much, but is a nice, and yummy, thought!

[identity profile] vixys.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
... I want to yell at you for still being ill, but it's hardly your fault - and hey, you had a good time, so that's shiny.

Just try not to die, mmkay? *epic hugs*

Also, I still demand photos. :D

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, please to not be yelling at me. At least I'm taking today off from work, ok? *epic hugs back* If you're around, I'd love to have some LJ chat with ya. I miss doing that.

Also, I'm working on setting up the photos right now. :D

Damn, I wish you had instant messenger.

[identity profile] vixys.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I fail at messengers. (I'm something of a Luddite. Technology confuses me. :D)

And I approve of the taking-the-day-off-work idea. *hugs* And yeah, I'm around. I have no school tomorrow, so I don't have to do any work tonight. Talk awaaaaaaaay.

*waits for photos* ♥

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't understand finding IM difficult, but hey, it works. LOL.

Yeah, taking the day off is good, especially because my vision keeps going fuzzy on me.

Currently working on editing photos. Coming soon! Here's a preview:

[identity profile] vixys.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Frodo! :DD I approve muchly. (Also, you look almost like you're on a stage there. Pourquoi?)

And! Something I discovered today about Oxforddddddd. (*dances*) Apparently, the University has a Tolkien society, and when they have dinners and whatnot, the students come dressed as characters from the books - so, essentially, that means that cosplay and fandom are parts of Oxford culture. I APPROVE OF THIS.

Anyway... :D ♥♥

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Parce que I AM on stage there. I was doing a masquerade performance. I've got a whole series of pictures from the skit. It was "The Journey of Frodo," or "LotR in 90 seconds." *grins*

OOOOH, fancy cosplay! I wish I could come! *cries*

[identity profile] vixys.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
LotR in 90 seconds. I like it. :D Anyone get it on video, do you know?

Hell, you come over, and I'll invite you. Or something. I don't know how these things work. :D *wallows in her ignorance*

Also, Freeeeeeeench. I miss French. Except I had a bitch of a teacher my last year, so yeah. Hmm. ♥

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehehe... yes, it's on video, but I don't have the video yet. The official vid comes out in a couple of months, but I'm still hunting for it online.

Yay for invitation! :D Everyone loves Frodo, right?

Ick... bitchy teachers can ruin it for anyone. But YAY FRENCH!

[identity profile] vixys.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You must link me to it when you find the vid - because that sounds so shiiiiiiiiiny! :D

Yes, everyone does love Frodo. Even Sauron, really. :D Also, you have read the books, right? I assume you have, because you're not exactly the halfway sort of fandomer, but still. I have to check. Welcome to my crazy world. And don't feel disrespected! Please? *tries not to be so strange*

Year 10, I had an awesome teacher - she never actually taught us anything, but we just seemed to absorb the language, and so we all got A*s in our end of year exams. The next year, the teacher was not so good. She was the only teacher I've ever been so snarky to that I was sent out of the class.

Fun times. :D ♥

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I promise, as soon as I find a vid, it'll be posted.

Yes, I've read the books... but I'll admit... I don't like Tolkien's writing style. I love the stories, but I dislike his style of story-telling. His dialogue is flat. In other words, almost all of his characters sound like his other characters, with the exceptions of Smeagol, Samwise, and Gimli. I actually think the movies brought the world to life better than the books, even though I was irked at the changes they made.

Heee... I'd love to have seen how snarky you were in class.

[identity profile] vixys.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
... I kinda agree with you on that, which makes me feel slightly strange. I absolutely adore Tolkien (first read the books at the tender age of seven), but I think I admire him more for his worldbuilding and the complexities of the storylines more than his writing style. Idk. He was an awesome man.

To be honest, I don't really mind the changes movies make. I mean, it's going to happen, so I just kinda ignore it now - but yeah, the whole paths of the dead bit in the RotK film kinda irks me. THAT IS NOT WHAT HAPPENED. AND WHERE ARE ELLADAN AND ELROHIR??

*breathes* Anyway. :D ♥

(There was much snark. And for the next week, I got the majority of my class coming up to me and congratulating me. Nobody really liked her. :D *facepalm*)

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't let it make you feel strange or guilty. Plain and simple, the LotR movie trilogy was PHENOMENAL, and Tolkein's writing was... very academic. Not difficult to read, but not a smooth literary style for pleasure reading. But his world-building skills were amazing. You can be a fan and still be honest about an author's shortcomings. I apply the same thing to JKRowling.

The changes they made for the movie weren't too bad, I'll admit. Some of them made me wonder why they did it though.

Heeee... now I REALLY wish I'd seen it. I've pulled a few stunts with obnoxious teachers myself. It's fun.

[identity profile] vixys.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess. In some circles having Tolkien and JKR in the same sentence might be anathema, but whatever. The comparison is apt. (I hate JKR's writing, but I lovelovelove her characters. Even Harry, although he gets on my nerves sometimes. :D)

Sometimes I feel sorry for that teacher, to be honest. I mean, she treated us (in top-set French) like we were five, but still - she was trying, and we kinda... made it hard for her. Idk. *has a guilty conscience* ♥

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, we screwed with my English teacher that way. For some reason, this knucklehead kept claiming our Honors English class, so that I had him for THREE FUCKING YEARS in a row. I mean, nice guy and all, but SERIOUSLY. So by 11th grade (junior year, I was 16), we'd had enough... but I had him wrapped around my little finger. Oh, the shit I pulled... but I was his top student, and he adored me. :d

Almost ready with photos.

[identity profile] mijan.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, the cosplay pics are up now!
http://mijan.livejournal.com/158232.html

Tell me what you think.
