Trekkie, eh?

For all the fannish fun, the geeky stereotypes, the meta, the movies, the costumes, the toys, and the many episodes of all the series... what's a Trekkie? Trekker? Star Trek fan. WHATEVER you want to call us. The name isn't important, but I can tell you what a Trekkie is.

A Trekkie is someone who has a greater hope for the future; one who truly believes that human beings can and WILL do something better with our tiny corner of the galaxy. And from there, believes that someday, we'll become both capable... and worthy... of going beyond our tiny corner, to explore something greater. Believes that there are new frontiers to discover, and a universe adventures to be had. And that as grand and vast as the universe may be, and whatever we may discover out there, there is nothing more incredible, precious, and unique as each individual sentient being. And in all that, and maybe more... we sure as hell better have a little bit of fun along the way. :)

Well, I guess I'm a Trekkie. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.

Sing it! I fell in love with the ST Universe when I saw that first episode come across the family's B&W tv back in the m60's and I'm still in love with it today.

One of the things I love about my Starfleet International 'ship, the USS Thermopylae NCC-74703 [ http://www.ussthermopylae.org ], is all the community service and support we do along with getting togather and sharing our love of the ST universe and our friendships.

If one being can go through live leaving the world around them a bit better for their being there, imagine what an entire world full of people can do.

I'm going into this kicking and screaming. I play in the fandom, I'm more than a little obsessed with the characters, I might as well cave and call myself a Trekkie.

I have some issues with the universe that I need to work through before I can fully embrace it, I suppose. :P

THAT. I find that very concept so hard to explain to people who don't like Star Trek. They don't understand that its not just a show.. its about what it represents, how we feel about humanity and the future. Thanks for articulating it in a way I have trouble doing.

I've always thought of myself as a Trekkie. Imagine my surprise when I found out Trekker was supposedly the preferred term. It is? I like Trekkie, actually.

When I watch Star Trek, I see what I hope will happen. People being more tolerant, learning to work together instead of fighting, Putting aside petty differences for the greater good. Diversity, equality, open minds.

I was just watching Star Trek: A Captain's Log last night, and it was actually talking about how at least, The Original Series and first seven movies, and the messages they were conveying, with diversity and fighting and tolerance. (It was released in 1998, so the most current movie was Generations.)

I'm a Trekkie, and proud of it.

ETA: Okay, so I was uninformed. The most current movie in 1998 wasn't Generations, it was First Contact, and maybe Nemesis? I've forgotten in the 5 seconds it took me to get from IMDb to here. Anyway, Generations was the last movie reference in the special I mentioned above. There, I covered my tail. :D

Yeah. And because of that, we don't hang out in our parents' basements slathering ourselves in Cheeto-orange powder. :)

Transhumanism?

Sounds to me like all Trekkies believe in transhumanism. If you haven't heard of it, which I'm sure you have, look up the Extropy Institute. It's all about endless technological advancements, self-enhancement, colonizing space and progress in general.

To some degree... yes, I think so. At least, if you don't have a small degree of hope for something of this sort, of creating a better future for humanity and exploring the universe, then it's like seeing a rainbow in black-and-white. You miss the point. The depth of the thrill can't exist without some hope for a future where such wonders exist.

At least, that's what I feel.

Hm, well, I just had to write a four page report about my view on transhumanism and.. I think some aspects of it, like uploading your memories into a computer and living in a machine, are a bit too radical. But space travel would indeed be cool. The Earth will always be my number one planet though XD

Yeah, see, I have NO interest in being downloaded into a computer or living in a machine, but I do have hopes for increasing technology, for exploring the galaxy, for traveling faster than light, and so on. I just still want humans to be human when we do it.
