Yeah, I don't really like the novelization either, but it was indeed strongly based from the screenplay. And from what I gather, the deleted scenes from the movie that was in the DVD were mostly incorporated in the novel. Now I kinda wonder whether to consider the deleted scenes, (at least, if not the novel) canon or not.
And I suppose, it becomes some sort of fanon that all of the cadets on Enterprise actually 4th year cadets in order the top brass to allow them to keep their posts on the Enterprise or they would have a year to catch up. While Kirk was already on its way to finish his studies in three years as he told Pike. You can see how the mention of graduating classes whenever talking of the death toll of the cadets in many fics. So I can't help to consider the assumption as something given.
Maybe we can say, the writers really messed up some finer details, just in order to get the whole crew together on the Enterprise in the end of the movie. And that kinda make me feel bad for Pike :( He only got command of his long-awaited lady for such a short time...
