Yep, and I agree with that other person's assessment.

I don't believe McCoy joined Starfleet as the only means of supporting himself financially. The man is a doctor, and if his wife destroyed his reputation and his medical practice back in Georgia, then he'd need to find another place to do his research. Take that idea of following one's dream and apply it here. How many times does McCoy remind us throughout Star Trek canon that "I'm a doctor, dammit!"? Clearly, that title and the practice associated with the title is his life's work, and is of the highest importance to him.

I didn't hear anything that made me believe he was required to make payments to Jocelyn. Nothing. I got the concept that the life they'd built together was gone, and THAT was the most important thing. No, McCoy wouldn't starve to death if he didn't find work, but if she ruined his family, is reputation, his career, and took his little girl? Yeah, that's the core of what he lost. And why the heck should there be alimony? Makes no sense.
